Abstract

Abstract : Intercultural communication focuses on the importance of understanding other?s language and cultural background in order to create effective communication. In terms of a subject studied at higher education setting, It is not only concern about mark and result of study but also about quality relationship between lecturers and students. This ideal situation appears to be unbridged well due to the practice of learning for examination. Several studies on effective learning have been conducted, these include  study about effective learning, how to create it and how it influenced by teaching pedagogy or other aspects such as those conducted in high school or at higher education settings. This article reviews several studies on intercultural competence from five different countries. The objective of this study is to present research from different context, models of intercultural communication developed in those settings and possible adaptive models to develop in higher education settings. Data were obtained from a careful review of international articles on the study of intercultural communication using inclusion and exclusion criteria. Result of the review reveals that intercultural communication is the effective pathway for developing teachers? intercultural sensitivity and professional identity, important aspects to teach in the lecture include emotional intelligence, personal competencies and social competencies that is relevant to future workforce. These studies also encourage lecturers to be curriculum developer rather than merely being curriculum implementer. Implications and suggestions for further study are also provided.

Abstract

This research aimed to finding out (1) What are courteousness methodologies utilized by male in classroom interaction at SMK Nasional Makassar, (2) What are courteousness methodologies utilized by female instructors in classroom interaction at SMK Nasional Makassar, (3) What are the most dominant politeness techniques utilized by male and female instructors in classroom interaction at SMK Nasional Makassar. There are 4 English teachers including 2 male teachers and 2 female teachers at SMK Nasional who participated. This study using a qualitative descriptive method. Data research was collected through observation. Based on the results researcher found that politeness strategies used by male were thirty-four utterances used by male teachers from the total utterances were eighty-eight. The researcher found twenty-one utterances as bold on record, seven utterances as positive politeness, five utterances as off-record and one utterance as Say-Nothing. Moreover, politeness strategies utilized by teachers based on the results found that there were fifty-four utterances used by female teachers from the total utterances were eighty-eight. In addition, there were thirty-three utterances as bold on record. Five utterances as off-record. Seven utterances as positive politeness. Nine utterances as Say-Nothing strategy. The most dominant courteousness techniques utilized by male and female teachers in English classroom at SMK Nasional Makassar was bold on-record. It can conclude that the teachers have close relationship with his students.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of using short stories as a teaching vocabulary resource for second grade students at Babul Khaer Islamic Boarding School Bulukumba. The study employed a quasi-experimental design with a pretest-posttest control group to evaluate the impact of short stories on students' vocabulary acquisition. The participants in this research were 16-member classes of second-grade students (XI. Exact-2 as the experimental class and XI. Social Science-2 as the control class). The study instrument consisted of a test and a questionnaire. This data showed that the pre-test mean score for the experimental class was 47.31 and that it increased to 56.75 on the post-test. The findings revealed that students in the experimental group, who were exposed to short stories, significantly improved their vocabulary compared to the control group. The results suggest that short stories can be a valuable resource for vocabulary instruction in second grade students. Furthermore, the study highlights the potential implications of integrating short stories into the curriculum, including enhanced student engagement, improved critical thinking skills, and enriched cultural understanding. Additional research is needed to further explore the long-term effects of using short stories for vocabulary instruction and its impact on students' overall language development.
