Abstract

The ‘Party officer’ label which is often communicated by The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (Partai Demokrasi Indonesia Perjuangan/PDIP) to describe Joko Widodo (Jokowi) became a bad political image for him. It is because Jokowi is seen as a man who always obeys the party, and has no power to argue or oppose them. This qualitative research with case study method aims to observe and analyse how the political move from Gibran Rakabuming Raka, the first born of Jokowi, as Prabowo Subianto’s vice president candidate in the 2024 Indonesia Presidential Election (Pemilihan Presiden/Pilpres) could be seen as a symbolic resistance message from Jokowi to PDIP. The result of this research shows that Jokowi uses the denial strategy offered by Theory of Image Restoration (TIR) to deal with the aforementioned bad political image, even though he does not directly deny it, but indirectly through that symbolic resistance message. This also shows that Javanese ethic is an extreme influence to Jokowi on his practice of politics and communications.

Abstract

Recent commodification studies tend to pay more attention to what is commodified but less to exaggerated narration that aims to boost the process specifically, particularly in Indonesia’s YouTube industry. This study aims to deconstruct how Atta Halilintar (AH), a top Indonesian YouTuber, uses exaggerated narrations as an extra flavor in his commodification practice in order to manage his power in the industry. Using Vincent Mosco’s view on commodification and multimodal critical discourse analysis framework, this study reveals how those exaggerated narrations are embedded in various aspects of the content such as titles, thumbnails, photography compositions, and conversations. The result of this study shows that AH exaggerated the narrations in his content to make it more enjoyable and subsequently easier to market both to the audience and advertising messages, no matter if the information is truly valid or not. Eventually, this action can be seen as an attempt by the content creator to do their political economy of communication agenda in the context of Indonesia’s YouTube industry, which is to help the content creator keep his power. As a consequence, this action at some point can harm the doer’s public image since there is an impression that they tend to neglect ethical values just for their political economy agenda. Thus, exaggerated narrations should get more attention in the future commodification of content studies due to insufficient conceptual exploration.

Abstract

The Indonesian Police have faced challenges in handling the crisis of intimidation involving the Sukatani band. This study employs quantitative content analysis of 32 news reports to identify communication strategies used by the police, as reported in the media. To support this analysis, semi-structured interviews were also conducted with 10 participants from diverse backgrounds—including lecturers, civil servants, employees, a political activist, a teacher, an artist, and an entrepreneur. Although limited in number, the participants’ responses showed consistent patterns, making their input sufficient to support the main analysis. These responses were used to enrich interpretation, as we also used reports from reputable organizations as other secondary data to draw generalizable conclusions. The findings show that the police failed to implement several strategies effectively due to low public trust and inconsistencies in applying the denial strategy, which undermined the success of subsequent efforts. In response, this study proposes a model combining corrective action and mortification strategies with transformational leadership to regain public trust. The model highlights the importance of strengthening leader-follower relationships to prevent similar crises. The Sukatani case—along with other crises of police misconduct—demonstrates that the current transformation process remains ineffective, underscoring the need for more concrete and holistic institutional reform.

Abstract

Recent commodification studies primarily focus on what is commodified, often overlooking how it is delivered through exaggerated narratives within the Indonesian YouTube industry. Using Vincent Mosco's work on commodification, this qualitative research aims to analyze how Atta Halilintar (AH), a prominent figure and one of the biggest powers in the industry, employs exaggerated narratives as a deliberate tool for commodifying information into exchange value, specifically to make the content more appealing and entertaining. The data of this research were gathered from the four most-viewed of AH's ‘Grebek Rumah’ videos. We use multimodal critical discourse analysis (MCDA) to analyze the data from its titles, thumbnails, photography compositions, and conversations. The results show that exaggerated narratives cannot only be seen as a deliberate tool to make content more appealing and entertaining. Beyond that, this tool also has capital interests and follows market logic. This means content that might be perceived as inappropriate will continue to be produced as long as it is still widely consumed/watched. However, unethical use of this tool, such as intentionally presenting misleading information, can damage the creator's reputation. Thus, the digital content creators must be aware of and use this deliberate tool ethically, rather than only focusing on maximizing capital potential. For theoretical contributions, we suggest exaggerated narratives to be considered as an important aspect in content commodification, and suggest future research to pay more attention to its use in other platforms.
