Abstract

This study examines the role of visual elements in Gojek’s “Cerdikiawan” digital advertisement in representing visual trends and the behavior of Generation Z. The main issue explored is how visual components can reflect current trends and connect with the behaviors of young consumers. The research aims to analyze the relevance of these visual elements using Charles Sanders Peirce’s semiotic theory, which divides signs into icons, indexes, and symbols. A descriptive qualitative method was employed, with primary data gathered through interviews with five Generation Z informants and secondary data from advertisement observations. The analysis focuses on identifying visual signs in the ad and interpreting them based on the audience’s social and cultural context. The findings show that iconic signs, such as a fork used as a creative solution, symbolize innovation and efficiency—traits valued by Generation Z. Indexical signs reflect their adaptability to technology, while symbolic elements convey emotional messages that enhance Gojek’s brand image. This study offers insights into how visual advertising can emotionally engage younger audiences through semiotic interpretation.

Abstract

The Indonesian Police have faced challenges in handling the crisis of intimidation involving the Sukatani band. This study employs quantitative content analysis of 32 news reports to identify communication strategies used by the police, as reported in the media. To support this analysis, semi-structured interviews were also conducted with 10 participants from diverse backgrounds—including lecturers, civil servants, employees, a political activist, a teacher, an artist, and an entrepreneur. Although limited in number, the participants’ responses showed consistent patterns, making their input sufficient to support the main analysis. These responses were used to enrich interpretation, as we also used reports from reputable organizations as other secondary data to draw generalizable conclusions. The findings show that the police failed to implement several strategies effectively due to low public trust and inconsistencies in applying the denial strategy, which undermined the success of subsequent efforts. In response, this study proposes a model combining corrective action and mortification strategies with transformational leadership to regain public trust. The model highlights the importance of strengthening leader-follower relationships to prevent similar crises. The Sukatani case—along with other crises of police misconduct—demonstrates that the current transformation process remains ineffective, underscoring the need for more concrete and holistic institutional reform.

Abstract

This article tries to explore how local brands, Indomie and Rucika, utilise commodified national memory through advertising depictions of their 50 years existence. Nationalism, which should be the basic attitude of society, is made into a commodity for business interests. Mosco’s commodification concept is used to reveal how depictions in advertising which has the potential to generate a feeling of banal nationalism. The analytical method used is Pentad analysis to interpret symbolic activity in every action and scene in advertising. The results of the analysis show that the audience's national memory is commodified through advertising by creating the perception that the two brands have accompanied the nation's journey, so consuming their products is a part of celebrating the spirit of nationalism. The depiction of the natural atmosphere and the hospitality of the people shows the characteristics of Indonesia that are highlighted in the advertisement, although in reality, this is only a small part of the reflection of reality. This has the potential to narrow our perspective on interpreting nationalism, which only revolves around “land” and “sea”.
