Abstract

Language plays a role in the meaning of consumer products in numerous ways. As a result, while establishing an advertising campaign for any ethnic group, language and media are crucial concerns. Surprisingly, English is being increasingly widely used in print advertising in countries like Indonesia, where English is not the predominant language of communication. This study aims to find the effect of using English and the usage of probability markers in triggering purchase intentions towards hygiene and cleaning related products due to Covid-19. This study adopted the mixed-method approach. The researchers distributed questionnaire adapted from Hornikx et al. (2010) to 150 participants and interviewed 15 people. The results showed that the participants preferred English version ads. In addition, when making an advertisement, advertisers must not only choose the appropriate language, but also the appropriate diction. Then, the participants agree that pledges as probability markers influenced their decision to purchase hygiene and cleaning products. Lastly, while designing advertisements, related to hygiene and cleaning products, the advertiser should pay special attention to the body-copy (writings).

Abstract

Interview With The Vampire is the first novel in Anne Rice’s vampire chronicles series, which was published in 1976. Interview with the Vampire has been nominated for various awards since its initial release in 1976, including the Bram Stoker Awards and the British Fantasy Awards. Unfortunately, many people are unaware that Rice’s firsthand experiences inspiring this novel. Previous research had managed to highlight the relationship between the author’s life with her literature works but none of them were related to vampire stories. Even though people might find monsters’ story is implausible, readers and viewers of fantasy, science fiction, and horror have the desire to explore the impossible (Athans, 2014). In addition, Wood (1999) strongly added that the details Rice has made about vampire has entirely changed the general vampire world. Rice’s major changes are: vampires were made more reasonable, believable, sympathetic, modern, and suited to the urban setting. On top of that, Rice has put the vampire closer to the readers as the story was told in first-person narration. Considering all of these, the researchers were intrigued in analyzing further the portrayal of Rice’s biography in her novel. This research used the descriptive qualitative method. While data in this research were taken from the novel Interview with the Vampire. This study found a resemblance of Anne Rice’s adulthood stage of life in Louis’s life. In addition, it is also found out that there are similarities between the characters in the novel with the real family member of Anne Rice and her childhood environment. Abstract

To create an exchange of information is the goal of communication. Surprisingly, we rarely express ourselves clearly, precisely, and explicitly when we write or speak. This research is a conversational analysis (CA) that studies eight students from the 5th semester of the English Department of a private university. The 21’23”- conversation about the Indonesian horror movie is analyzed based on the classification of four lexical categories and categories of EL’s pragmatic function elastic language proposed by Zhang (2015). This research aims to identify the implied messages conveyed by women and men as they talk about Indonesian horror movies. The study showed that approximate stretchers are the most used kind of elastic language. And, men and women use approximate stretchers at similar rates. The same number of approximate stretchers opposes the claim that women are less assertive. Then, women tend to use more intensifiers, which enhances interaction in communication. The last finding of this study was that women employed more epistemic stretchers than men. Additionally, this research finds that both men and women used elastic language for just-right elastic function mainly. Because approximation is frequently sufficient in this situation, approximate stretchers are usually chosen for just-right elastic terms.

Abstract

Despite its importance, teaching speaking in English classes has become challenging. First, most teachers cannot encourage students to speak English because of a lack of time. Secondly, as a result of their fear of making mistakes, the students rarely engage in English-speaking classes. Similarly, the writers identify this issue when teaching speaking to second-semester English Language and Literature (BBI) students at Universitas Bunda Mulia. The students are reluctant to speak out in class and, when they do, they talk in a very low voice. On top of that, the writers also noticed that the students rely so much on their notes. This study aims to study to what extent vlogs help students to speak English in a class by using Classroom Action Research (CAR). There are 71 participants from the first semester, majoring in English Language and Literature (BBI). The data is taken from questionnaires result, and interviews with samples of the participants. In addition, a ratter is invited for collaboration to assess the pre-test and post-test. The study reveals that vlogs in speaking classes improve students' test scores by encouraging open communication and enhancing confidence, professionalism, and improvability. It helps students practice speaking English in front of an audience.
