Abstract

This study aims to investigate the types of oral language assessment tasks which is used by the teacher in assessing EYL speaking and listening performance. The national curriculum also decides to introduce English since elementary schools as include in local content subjects. However, some English teachers still find some difficulties in forming the teaching methodology and its assessment. Some debates coming whether English for young learners should concern on productive skills or receptive skills or cover all skills. Besides, some problems also arise from how to assess the young learners since it is as local subject and they also still learn the second language (Indonesian). Therefore, this article concerns on speaking and listening assessment since the writer think that speaking and listening are the key points for young learner to study further

Abstract

Background: The behavior of bepidara in treating fever for the Banjar community is local wisdom. However, many people still don't know about the scientific evidence related to bepidara. Objective: This community service aimed to increase scientific, evidence-based knowledge about bepidara cultural behaviour in treating fever in Banjar communities. Method: This activity implemented health education through socialization and interactive discussions about scientific evidence of cultural behaviour in treating fever. Data collection was carried out in stages, namely pre-test and post-test, using instruments in questionnaires for 33 respondents. Data analysis was conducted using categorical frequency distribution tables and paired t-test/Wilcoxon statistical tests. Results: There was an increase in respondents' knowledge about scientific evidence of cultural behavior in handling fever before and after being given health education, both in the excellent category from 0% to 79% or from an average score of 2 to 7.5. Meanwhile, in analysis using statistical tests, the value of p=0.001 (p<0.005) was obtained, which means that the health education provided impacted increasing knowledge. Conclusion: There was an increase in respondents' knowledge about scientific evidence of bepidara cultural behavior in treating fever in Banjar communities after being given health education.

Abstract

Aims. This research investigates English teachers’ preparedness to integrate Information and Communication Technology (ICT) into their teaching practices in the post-pandemic context. The study specifically focuses on three objectives: (1) to assess the level of readiness demonstrated by English teachers in adopting ICT after the pandemic; (2) to explore the ways in which teachers utilize ICT tools within classroom instruction; and (3) to identify the primary barriers and difficulties teachers encounter when implementing ICT in the post-pandemic period. Methods. Employing a mixed-methods approach, this study integrates both quantitative and qualitative data to provide a comprehensive understanding of the topic. The quantitative component examines variable relationships based on established theoretical frameworks, while qualitative inquiry supports deeper contextual interpretation. Participants included 48 English teachers from public junior high schools in Yogyakarta City, with four teachers selected for in-depth interviews. The questionnaire was adapted from validated instruments developed by Singh and Chan (2014), Al-Furaydi (2013), Davis (1989), and Zara-ee (2011). Descriptive statistical analysis was used for quantitative data, and qualitative data were analyzed through the interactive model proposed by Miles et al. (2014). Results. Findings reveal that 74% of the participants exhibited a high level of ICT readiness, whereas 26% demonstrated limited preparedness. Conclusion. The interviews highlighted several obstacles hindering ICT integration, including unstable internet connectivity, financial limitations, insufficient ICT-related training, and inadequate school infrastructure. Implementation. The most prominent challenge identified in this research was the shortage of professional development opportunities or ICT training for teachers.

Abstract

This study aims to improve the English speaking skills of eighth-grade students of MTs Al Falaah Pandak using short videos to aid the learning process in which English is taught as a foreign language. The research was classroom action research with the subjects consisting of 30 eighth graders of MTs Al Falaah Pandak. This research utilized both the qualitative and quantitative data analysis. The qualitative approach to collecting the data was done through observations and interviews with the observation checklist and interview guidelines carefully designed as the instruments. The quantitative approach was done through a survey with questionnaires, field notes and tests as the instruments. The results indicated that using short videos as input in the teaching and learning of speaking can improve the students' speaking skills, as shown by the students' test results that improved gradually from cycle 1 to cycle 2. In cycle 1, the average score of the students' speaking test was 65.8. This noticeably improved in cycle 2, where the average score was 75, showing an improvement by 9.2 points. Further implications and potential implementation of using short videos as input in the teaching and learning of speaking in EFL classes are discussed.
