Abstract

This research has been conducted to analyze of the rainfall characteristics and water balanced were used to determination of growing periods in North Halmahera. The method was used is this research was a survey method in relation to data collection that were climate data which were taken from Gamar Malamo Meteorological Station at Galela, meanwhile soil, crops and land use data were taken from local agriculture office and other related institutions. To analyze of climate data several methods were used such as; ranking order method was used to analyze rainfall; modified Penman method to estimate potential evapotranspiration, bookkeeping system (way of Thorntwaite and Mather 1957 in Usman, 2004) to analyze water balance and Reddy method was used to determine available growing seasons. The results of climate data analyses entirely showed that the pattern of rainfall in north Halmahera is monsoon which characterized by one peak of rainfall occurred in May and also this area prevailing tropical seas climate with annually average rainfall is 2.300 mm. The length of available growing seasons in this area occurred for 8 – 12 months starting from November and ending in Oktober.

Abstract

This research was done to analyze physical properties of fermented cocoa beans using various fermentation methods and fermipan concentrations. The aim of this study was to identify effective fermentation methods to produce quality cocoa beans. For each trial 10 kg of fresh cocoa beans were treated with fermipan in concentrations 0.5% w/v and 1% w/v. Fermentation trials were conducted in wooden boxes, plastic baskets and in heaps without turning the materials. The trials were conducted aerobically at room temperature for the next 6 days (144 hours). The results showed that the cocoa bean temperature increased significantly the 24th hour of fermentation and then slowly decreased until the end of the fermentation period except for the beans in heaps. The highest temperature of 42oC was found in beans in wooden boxes using the 1% w/v fermipan concentration. During fermentation, the pH of the pulp increased according to the period of fermentation and reached a peak at 144 hour. The highest pH was 7.02 found in beans placed in plastic baskets with 1% w/v of fermipan concentration. Overall the cocoa beans which fermented in wooden boxes with 1% w/v of fermipan gave the best quality with shell content of 15.05 %, brown color intensity of 90%, unfermented beans 2%, insect infestation 1.14% and beans germinated 1.90%.

Abstract

Virgin coconut oil (VCO) contains medium chain fatty acids of which 45-50% lauric acid. Lauric acid has been proven to become a strong anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial agent. The objective of this study was to analyze of physico-chemical properties and antioxidant activity of VCO using Ordinary Tall Coconut Cultivars of North Halmahera with fermentation process. The results showed lauric acid (C12) is fatty acid (FA) in VCO were found containing predominantly 47.07%, while the total phenol content is about 11.23 mg GAE/ 100 g oil and antioxidant activity was determined using DPPH is 9.76 %. Especially for free fatty acid (FFA) content is range from 0.23%, iodine value is about 7.75%, the saponification value is about 256.39 (mg KOH/g), and moisture content ranges from 0.32%. The color is clear (colorless) and it is real aromatic coconut (VCO). Collectively, all results obtained in this study were found comparable with the Standard APCC except for linoleic acid, which has a slightly lower value compared to the standard value.

Abstract

Sebagai daerah kepulauan, Maluku Utara memiliki keragaman hayati yang tinggi termasuk keragaman suku, budaya dan tradisi lokal. Tumbuhan obat merupakan suatu entitas yang tumbuh dan dimanfaatkan oleh masyarakat lokal untuk kepentingan peningkatan derajat kesehatan sesuai pengetahuan yang dimiliki. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menginventarisir jenis tumbuhan berkhasiat obat dan pemanfaatannya oleh masyarakat Suku Kao, Suku Tobelo dan Suku Galela di Halmahera Utara. Metode yang dipakai dalam penelitian ini adalah survey lapangan melalui wawancara dengan 105 responden yang terseleksi melalui teknik Snowball Sampling, serta melakukan penelusuran ke lokasi/habitus tumbuhan obat. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terdapat 83 jenis tumbuhan obat dari 45 family yang dimanfaatkan oleh masyarakat suku Kao, suku Tobelo dan suku Galela dalam pengobatan tradisional berdasarkan pengetahuan lokal yang dimiliki. Spesies tumbuhan obat yang paling banyak digunakan berbentuk herba dan daun adalah bagian tumbuhan yang paling sering dipakai. Adapun metode preparasi yang paling sering dipakai adalah perebusan dan sebagain besar diaplikasikan dengan cara diminum. Berragam jenis penyakit yang diobati menggunakan ramuan dari tumbuhan obat yaitu penyakit organ dalam, penyakit kulit, penyakit otot dan persendian, serta penyakit mulut dan gigi.
