Abstract

The teachings of Islam come from a single source, God the Al- mighty. However, the application of Islam in people’s lives has become very diverse because of the interaction between these teachings with the local culture and traditions of the adherents. The differences and diver- sity that arise in the practices of Islamic teachings, if not treated prop- erly, can lead to blaming other people’s practices of Islamic teachings. Buka Luwur Ceremony is a culture in the Kudus area, Central Java, which has interacted with Islamic values. Buka Luwur Ceremony aims to pray for the spirit of Sunan Kudus, and at the same time to commemorate his services for successfully spreading Islam in Kudus area. In addition, it is also intended to model the success of Sunan Kudus in laying the founda- tion in preaching. In Islamic teaching perspective, Buka Luwur ceremony is full of Islamic and cultural values relevant to be applied in the midst of radicalism. Buka Luwur ceremony is able to unite two different prin- ciples between Islam and the culture/traditions of society.

Abstract

This research explores social inclusion in the Jamasan Pusaka ceremony in Kalibening, Dawuhan, Banyumas as a strategy to preserve cultural heritage. The study finds that the practice of inclusion involves the community, the village government, and the Banyumas Regency Culture and Tourism Office. The form of Islam practised in Dawuhan Village accommodates the culture and customs inherited by the ancestors. This can be seen in the 2019 Jamasan Pusaka ceremony, which included the recitation of shalawat and religious lectures, unlike in previous years. The involvement of the village government is shown through the granting of permits. This support ensures the smooth running of the event through official authorization and assistance. The relationship between the Jamasan Pusaka ceremony and the Department of Culture and Tourism is evident from the department's participation in giving a speech before the ceremony began, which showed their support and motivated the Kalibening community to organize the event. The efforts made by the Kalibening community to preserve this cultural heritage include teaching how to perform the Jamasan Pusaka ceremony and taking the benefits of the ceremony. They are trained to appreciate Jamasan Pusaka by understanding every step of the tradition.

Every Wayang Kulit performance conducted by Kiai Syakirun conveyed meaningful messages, especially regarding religious, social, and cultural life. In his performance, every wayang movement showed a positive message. This spectacular performance lies because the Islamic values and practices used by Kiai Syakirun are more easily captured by the public. In this study, the authors used historical research methods consisting of heuristics, verification, interpretation, and historiography. The theory used in this research is the theory of cultural and religious relevance. The results of this study are in the process of preaching in Tipar Village, Kec. Rawalo, Kab. Banyumas, Kiai Syakirun using shadow puppet media. He recites Quranic verses echoed with songs and explain the wayang characters depicted in human life. Kiai Syakirun's role in spreading Islam in Tipar Village is very influential within his neighborhood. As Kiai Syakirun's influence gradually increased, inhabitants in his community abandoned their customs, such as worshiping trees and eating wild boars as side dishes.
