Abstract

Social media as a means of communication can also be a place for branding, entrepreneurship and marketing. Various apps are very easy to access including online dating apps. The Tinder app is an online dating platform that came into existence in 2012 and has the highest percentage in 2022 compared to other online dating apps. Communication plays an important role in the message exchange that occurs in the Tinder app. The established communication patterns will affect the first impression when meeting in the media. Every human being has expectations of non-verbal messages or behaviors from others. This study aims to analyze the theory of violation of expectations of tinder app users as a communication intermediary to establish relationships. This study used a qualitative descriptive method by conducting structured interviews with active users of the Tinder application. Interviews were conducted to find out the informant’s perspective when using the application. Assumptions arising from the violation of expectations result in the non-occurrence of the same expectations. Based on the results of research, the tinder application is not only to find a partner but also can add relationships both in the world of lectures and in the world of work. Then, two out of three tinder app respondents managed to achieve expectations in using the tinder app.

Abstract

This study is motivated by students who cannot express their opinions, cannot accept their strengths and weaknesses and have difficulty interacting with friends and the irenvironment, feel inferior to their body shape, different skin color compared to their friends and during class hours students do not dare to express their opinions in front of the class because they are not confident. This study aims to describe the description of self-esteem at SMAN 1 2X11 Enam Lingkung. This type of research is quantitative with a descriptive approach. The population of this study was 694 students at SMAN 1 2X11 Enam Lingkung in the 2024/2025 school year and a sample of 328 students taken through proportional random sampling technique. Data collection in this study used a Likert scale, namely a self-esteem questionnaire that has been tested for validity with the Pearson correlation formula (0.355). The data in this study were processed with descriptive statistical analysis techniques. The results of this study indicate that the self-esteem of students at SMAN 1 2X11 Enam Lingkung as a wholeis in themoderate category (65.24). Based on the results of this study, counseling teachers can provide assistance to improve students' self-esteem in the form of information services, content mastery services and group guidance services.

Abstract

The campaign on the risks and dangers of smoking has become prevalent through social media, including the Instagram account @suara_tanpa_rokok. It is known that there are 56 content pieces with a threatening message approach regarding the risks of smoking from @suara_tanpa_rokok between 2021 and June 2023. The messages and responses to these messages are interesting to explore from a health communication perspective. This study employs the Extended Parallel Process Model (EPPM) as its analytical framework. The quantitative content analysis method was chosen for this research. The results indicate that health campaign content utilizing a threatening message approach on the risks of smoking in @suara_tanpa_rokok elicits an 83.9% maladaptive response. The lack of awareness and willingness to quit smoking contribute to the emergence of this response.

Abstract

Adapting to the habits of communicating in English poses a significant challenge for freshmen of English Education Department in Indonesian context. They are required to listen to their lecturers’ explanation in English as well as to use English during classroom discussion. This research aims to explore the factors influencing the willingness to speak English. This study used mixed methods with the explanatory design. The quantitative data were collected by means of survey. As many as 40 first-year students majoring in English education in an Islamic state university in Cirebon filled in the questionnaire. The qualitative data were collected by interviewing 8 students. The quantitative data were analyzed with descriptive statistics while the qualitative data was used to corroborate the analysis of the quantitative findings. The results showed that the factors influencing students' willingness to speak are task type, topic of discussion (topics of familiarity, topics of interest, and topic preparation), interlocutor, students' personal characteristics (fear of negative evaluation, fear of correctness of speech, personality (shyness), self-confidence, teacher's role, and seating location.
