Abstract

Abstract

Sports is all kinds of physical activity in the form of games and competitions against oneself, others, or natural elements. Sports play a crucial role in maintaining both physical and mental health of individuals. Lack of sports can increase stress levels, negatively impacting an individual’s well-being. This research aims to explore the relationship between sports and stress levels among students of the Faculty of Medicine, Christian University of Indonesia (FK UKI) class of 2022. Through an analytical survey approach with a cross-sectional method, data were obtained from the Godin leisure-time exercise questionnaire and the PSS-10 questionnaire filled out by 116 respondents. The sample was taken based on a population of 164 students. The analysis results indicate a significant relationship between sports and stress levels among FK UKI class of 2022 students (p < 0.001; correlation coefficient -0.435). Most respondents were 19 years old and predominantly female. This study concludes that sports play a role in reducing stress levels among these students. The implications of this research reinforce the importance of integrating sports into mental health approaches in educational environments as effective interventions in addressing student stress. Thus, integrating sports into students' daily activities can positively contribute to improving their physical and mental well-being and strengthening the relationship between sports and mental health.

Abstract

Vital Capacity (VC) serves as one of the main parameters in assessing lung function. Obesity, which can be measured using Body Mass Index (BMI) and waist circumference, has the potential to affect respiratory mechanics and decrease lung function. Medical students with limited physical activity are at risk of experiencing reduced VC due to increased BMI and central obesity. This study aims to determine the relationship between BMI and waist circumference with VC among 2023 cohort students of the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Kristen Indonesia. This research is an observational study with a cross-sectional design. A total of 57 students participated as samples. Data were collected through measurements of BMI, waist circumference, and VC using spirometry. Chi-square test was used for analysis. Results showed that 54.4% of respondents had abnormal BMI, 40.4% had central obesity, and 57.9% exhibited abnormal vital capacity. A significant relationship was found between BMI and VC (p=0.001), as well as between waist circumference and VC (p=0.010). These findings indicate that increased BMI and waist circumference may contribute to reduced lung function.

Abstract

Stunting is a growth disorder in children which is measured by the child's height which is indicated by a z-score below -2 SD of the growth standard according to WHO. One of the risk factors that can cause stunting is the frequency of antenatal check-ups. Antenatal examination (ANC) is a health service provided to pregnant women, by the provisions of Minister of Health Regulation Number 97 of 2014. The 2018 Riskesdas data obtained from 34 provinces, 416 regencies, and 98 cities in Indonesia was used in this study. It was then further processed by the authors at the Faculty of Medicine, Christian University of Indonesia, in July 2024. This study further analyzes the 2018 Basic Health Research (Riskesdas) data. A cross-sectional method was used in this study, considering the data collection of research variables obtained at a specific point in time, by Riskesdas. Diagnostic testing was then used to determine whether there is a relationship between the frequency of antenatal care visits and the incidence of stunting in toddlers in Indonesia. Based on this study, 49,283 pregnant women underwent antenatal check-ups according to the criteria, while 6,206 did not meet the criteria. Among toddlers, 15,192 children experienced stunting, while 40,297 did not. The chi-square test results showed a p-value of <0.001, which is less than 0.05, indicating that, statistically, there is a significant relationship between the frequency of antenatal check-ups during pregnancy and the occurrence of stunting in toddlers. Based on data processing and discussion, this study concludes that there is a relationship between the frequency of antenatal care (ANC) visits by pregnant women and the occurrence of stunting in toddlers, with a p-value of <0.001 and an odds ratio of 0.826. This p-value indicates a strong relationship between the frequency or number of antenatal visits and the occurrence of stunting. This means that the likelihood of stunting occurring is 0.826 times higher compared to those who undergo antenatal check-ups according to the standard.

Abstract

Background: Physical fitness is the ability to carry out daily and leisure activities efficiently without excessive fatigue, thereby reducing the risk of chronic diseases. However, few studies in Indonesia have explored the link between body fat percentage and physical fitness among medical students. This study aims to analyze that relationship in students of the Faculty of Medicine, Indonesian Christian University. Methods: This observational cross-sectional study involved 57 university students selected using simple random sampling. Inclusion criteria were active medical students from the 2023 intake who were willing to participate. Exclusion criteria were students with musculoskeletal injuries or chronic diseases affecting physical performance. Body fat percentage was measured using skinfold calipers, and physical fitness was assessed using the Harvard Step Test. Data were analyzed using the Pearson correlation test. Ethical approval was obtained from the Health Research Ethics Committee of the Faculty of Medicine, Indonesian Christian University. Results: The analysis showed that the majority of students had a low physical fitness index, with 71.9% of participants having low physical fitness. A significant correlation was found between body fat percentage and physical fitness (p = 0.015), with increasing body fat percentage associated with decreased physical fitness. Conclusion: Increasing body fat percentage correlates with decreasing levels of physical fitness, suggesting that higher levels of body fat in college students are likely to negatively impact their ability to perform physical activity efficiently and reduce their risk of chronic disease.
