Abstract

Speech is the primary means by which humans communicate with each other. When we listen to someone speaking we generally focus on understanding their meaning. We are trying to interpret what does the speaker want to tell us by generating the ideas of the language she/he produces. Since the language is series of sound that has meaning, the perception of speech involves the recognition of patterns in the acoustic signal in both time and frequency. It is much easier to get the meaning of a conversation if both the speaker and the listener has same language. But, if both of them has different language it will take time to get the clear meaning of a conversation. This paper is trying to examine the basic issues in speech perception that human beings face everyday consciously or unconsciously.

Writing has become a challenging skill for EFL or ESL students to overcome. It is not only required the ability to compose a good writing but also a deep layer known as the grammatical aspect. Understanding grammar is very important for building good sentences. Hence, this study aims to find out the most grammatical error found in students’ corpuses and classify the students’ error. To generate this purpose, the researcher explored the grammatical mistakes made with the aid of using college students at the first semester of Pontianak State Polytechnic as the sample of research. This study was conducted using descriptive research using students’ corpus as the data collection. The results of this study discovered that the addition error is the most frequent type of error made based on the frequency on the percentage that was 39,02%. Furthermore, this kind of error is classified as substantial. As for the other types of errors made by students, namely mis formation with the total of errors as 35.36%, omission of error as 23.17% and error in disordering as 2.44%. It can be concluded that the students made errors due to their background of knowledge and their lack of understanding of English structure.

Abstract

This classroom action research aims to foster the EFL students’ oral communication skills in the English and English literature program in a presentation skills class through an individual presentation project. This research was conducted at the Sekolah Tinggi Bahasa Asing (STBA) Pontianak, whose participants were taken from the fourth-semester students. This research was carried out in three cycles using observation checklists and field notes to collect the data. Afterward, the data were explained quantitatively and qualitatively. The findings show that individual presentation concretely fosters the students’ oral communication skills in the third cycle. The fostering is proven by improving individual presentation aspects such as clarity, sound volume, body position and eye contact, pause, and listener’s attention. Moreover, the fostering is indicated by the changing of the scoring scale from need improvement to good. Hopefully, this research can contribute to advancing research in oral communication skills.
