Abstract

Thematic learning is expected that learning activities can involve students actively and in learning activities, so that students get direct experience which makes learning activities much more meaningful. Thematic teaching materials with the STEM approach are an alternative to improve students' problem-solving abilities. This study aims to analyze the validity, convenience, attractiveness, usefulness, and effectiveness of thematic teaching materials with the STEM approach to improve students' problem solving abilities in elementary schools. This research is a type of Research and Development (R&D) research, the development is carried out according to the theory of Borg & Gall. The subjects in this study were determined using a purposive sampling technique and obtained as many as 20 students. The data collection tool uses valid and reliable test instruments. Validity data analysis techniques show that thematic teaching materials with the STEM approach are very valid to use. Effectiveness data analysis technique uses N-Gain with a calculation result of 0.57 with a significance of 0.01<0.05. Based on this research, it can be concluded that the thematic teaching materials with the STEM approach developed are valid and effective for improving students' problem solving abilities in elementary schools.

Abstract

Mathematical representation ability is an important skill for students to transform complex problems into simpler forms. However, field observations based on the pretest results of mathematical representation ability conducted at SMP Negeri 18 Bandarlampung show that many students have not yet mastered this skill. This is supported by the 2022 PISA results, which indicate that students’ mathematical representation ability is still categorized as low. Therefore, it is necessary to apply a learning model that can help students improve their mathematical representation skills. This study aims to determine the effect of the guided inquiry learning model on students’ mathematical representation ability. The population in this study consisted of all eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 18 Bandarlampung in the odd semester of the 2024/2025 academic year, totaling 174 students distributed across six classes. Sampling was conducted using the cluster random sampling technique, selecting class VIII B (28 students) as the experimental class and class VIII D (29 students) as the control class. The research design used was the pretest-posttest control group design. The data in this study are quantitative data obtained from the students’ mathematical representation ability test. Based on data analysis using the Mann-Whitney U test, it was found that the improvement in mathematical representation ability of students who participated in guided inquiry learning was higher than that of students who followed conventional learning. Thus, the guided inquiry learning model has an effect on improving students' mathematical representation ability.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effectiveness of inquiry-based learning model design with a realistic approach to improve students' critical thinking skills. The learning design was developed using the Borg and Gall design consisting of 10 development steps. The sample in this study were students of class IVA and IVB SDN 55 Gedong Tataan Pesawaran totaling 26 students in each class. Class IVA as the experimental class and class IVB as the control class. The results of the N-Gain test conducted obtained a value of 0.64 in the experimental class with a moderate category and 0.42 in the control class with a moderate category. The results of the independent sample t-test conducted by comparing the pretest values ​​of the experimental and control classes obtained a sig. value of 0.236> 0.05, which means H0 is rejected so that it can be concluded that there is no significant difference in the pretest values ​​of the experimental and control classes. The test results on the posttest value obtained a sig. value of 0.001<0.05, which means H1 is accepted so that it can be concluded that there is a significant difference between the average values ​​of the experimental and control classes
