Abstract

Grammatical intricacy refers to how often a clause complex in a text in comparison with simple clauses. It is accepted that any text has a different level of intricacy (complexity). This is all related to how much information is introduced in a clause complex which can contain more than one simple clause. Classification of clauses (sentences) applies to the determination of grammatical intricacy (complexity) of a text. If in a text there are more clause complexes than simple clauses, it can be said that the text is more complex in the sense that it presents more information in a condensed way. Consequently, learners are potential to encounter problems. The concept of this article only focuses on the paratactic clause, hypotactic clause construction and the combination among clause constructions used by students.

Abstract

This study investigates the comparative perceptions of Indonesian and Philippine EFL students regarding the use of ChatGPT in academic writing, focusing on the interplay between trust and skepticism. Employing a quantitative comparative research design with complementary qualitative inputs, data were collected from 232 university students using a structured questionnaire consisting of 20 closed-ended items analyzed quantitatively and two open-ended items analyzed qualitatively. Descriptive statistics and comparative analysis revealed that both groups perceived ChatGPT positively as a tool that improves writing quality, coherence, and confidence. However, students also expressed ethical concerns about plagiarism, overreliance, and authenticity. Filipino students tended to exhibit higher trust due to greater digital familiarity, while Indonesian students demonstrated stronger skepticism rooted in institutional and moral caution. The findings highlight the coexistence of trust and critical awareness, emphasizing the need for AI literacy education that integrates technological proficiency with ethical reflection. The study contributes to global discussions on AI-assisted writing by contextualizing the phenomenon within Southeast Asian educational settings.

Abstract

This study explores pre-service English teachers’ perspectives on implementing the Gallery Walk strategy to enhance EFL students’ speaking skills. Using a qualitative case study design, the participants consisted of five pre-service teachers who conducted their teaching practicum at one of public schools in Central Java. Data were collected through open-ended questionnaires, and classroom observations. The findings reveal that the Gallery Walk strategy was perceived as an effective, interactive, and student-centered approach that encouraged students’ participation, boosted confidence, and improved fluency, vocabulary use, and argument structure. Despite challenges related to time management, student shyness, and material preparation, the teachers adapted through reflection and instructional adjustment. These results suggest that Gallery Walk is a feasible and beneficial strategy for enhancing speaking skills in EFL contexts.
