Abstract

What makes learners shun speaking English in the classroom?Are they are shy, lack of confidence or afraid of making grammaticalmistakes? One of many ways to overcome this problem is by usingcooperative learning. In cooperative learning, the undergraduates areencouraged to work in small groups in order to create3-D miniaturemodels and finally gallery walk. In the Universitas PGRI Adi Buana(UNIPA), there is an activity named ―Amazing UNIPA Race‖. An activityencourages students to use verbal communication during Cross CulturalUnderstanding (CCU) class. Students work in small groups and must alsobe a team player. Amazing UNIPA Race promotes fun learning activityand students‘ creativity in creating 3-D miniature models. Therefore, thispaper is intended to share and provide an activity as a model wherestudents are motivated to speak and enjoy fun activities. This paper ispresented as a hands-on experience of the Amazing UNIPA Race to theparticipants who want to use it for their classroom teaching.

Abstract

Teaching material is needed in teaching-learning activities in the classroom. Without an appropriate material, a teacher might have difficulty in delivering the lesson, especially for children. TEYL (Teaching English to Young Learners) is a compulsory subject for the English Department students of Adi Buana University and this course is only offered for the final year students. To support TEYL course, undergraduates need to create English Teaching Materials that are useful for both teacher and students in school. Therefore, it is important to conduct this study in order to develop English teaching materials that meet the students‟ need. The author concerns on the authentic teaching materials made by the undergraduates. The final product of English teaching materials for young learners are Let‟s Count and Clip, Boggle, Noun Clipboard, What Time is It?, and Dominoes Card. All in all, these English teaching materials have been used in one of the private schools (BP school) to help children learn English. Based on the result, it can be concluded that Let‟s Count and Clip as the most popular material among the children. It is quite attractive and appropriate to help grade three of primary school learn English.

Abstract

Evaluating the English textbook used at one of the National Plus Schools in Surabaya (SNA), this study aims at finding out whether “My Pals are Here!” fulfill the objectives of teaching English and whether it is designed according to the principles of Teaching English to Young Learners (TEYL). Further, the instrument of this study was the researcher herself and equipped with an Evaluation Checklist by Bilash (2009). Also, an interview with a teacher who has used that book in class provided for this research. Using the checklist, it was found out that “My Pals are Here!” is in accordance with the objective of teaching English at SNA, which is to help learners to be able to use English for communication especially orally. “My Pals are Here!” is also fulfill the principles of TEYL

Abstract

Since TOEFL is sat by students before being successfullyadmitted into various higher institutions of education at tertiary levelaround the world, they should reach and achieve a satisfactory pass inthe examination. It is an instrument to determine students’ ability tocarry out their programs of study in English. The TOEFL internetbased testing (iBT) measures the ability in using and understanding ofEnglish. It also assesses reading, listening, writing and speaking,focusing on integrating the four skills. The examination measuresstudents’ ability to use English language as a tool to communicateeffectively in academic settings. TOEFL iBT is also being taken bythose who want get automaticity for a promotion in their respectivejobs and application for visas. Therefore there is a necessity forlecturers to find out an innovative teaching model to use for theirconsumption. A model that should be effective and innovative in thelearning and teaching of English for foreign language learners thatcaters for local needs. This research is to find out the innovativeteaching and learning of English at English First (EF) which is situatedat Kayun, Surabaya. There are many other institutions that offerTOEFL iBT preparation. However, EF is chosen because of theteaching strategies are unique in a way that the practitioners are veryexperience and they themselves are native speakers of English. It ishoped that this study should be a fruitful effort in finding a goodmodel for teaching English to students who are motivated to learn andyet find it difficult to master the language in a non-Englishenvironment. This study also aims to give more description orinformation about the implementation of the innovative teaching ofTOEFL iBT examination for the lecturers in Adi Buana University intheir English language proficiency courses. The instruments used forthis study are interviews, classroom observations and field notes
