Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic affects almost all aspects of life, including social and language aspects. One of the phenomena of language change is the emerging of new words during COVID-19. Taken from a linguistic perspective, this research aims to analyze the new words created during COVID-19, to analyze their meaning of the new words, and how they affect human social life. The method used in this research is discourse analysis using a descriptive qualitative research design. The researchers collected these new English words from social media, books, articles, and news. Findings reveal that there are nineteen new English words created during COVID-19. These new words are now very popular on social media and are used in general conversation. In addition, it suggests that these new words have profoundly affected our social life and also the teaching and learning process of English.

Abstract

This study is aimed at examining how EFL students in Indonesia utilized photovoice in writinganalytical exposition text and exploring their experience as well as perception in learning to write. Four (4) students of senior high school in Indonesia who are taken randomly participated in this qualitative study. The data were gathered from students’ writing of analytical text along with the picture/photograph and interview. Students’ photographs and analytical text were analyzed using photovoice analysis procedures. It consisted of selecting, contextualizing, and codifying phases. Results found three main themes: the main idea, generic structure, and language features. According to the results, photovoice is not only effective for students but als makes them feel interested and motivated in learning writing. In addition, photovoice allows students to express their creativity through the lens of a camera. Photovoice has incredibly fostered students’ learning in writing. They all have positive attitudes toward photovoice participatory learning. Thus, it can be a pedagogical tool to teach writing in an EFL setting. Although this study yielded positive outcomes in writing skills, this can not overgeneralize the outcomes. Therefore, future studies on how students write other writing genres in EFL classrooms need to be conducted.

Abstract

As global interconnectedness increases, the demand for high-quality bilingual education and by extension, well-prepared bilingual educators, has grown significantly. This systematic review investigates global trends and challenges in bilingual teacher education across diverse sociocultural contexts. A total of 68 peer-reviewed studies published between 2005 and 2022 were analyzed using Saldaña’s coding method, with data sourced from six major databases and selected through PRISMA guidelines. Thematic analysis revealed six core areas: global research trends in teacher preparation, evolving teacher competencies, identity formation and intercultural competence, pedagogical models, language policy, and implementation challenges. Findings show that successful bilingual teacher preparation programs are supported by culturally responsive pedagogy, robust policy alignment, and sustained professional development. However, disparities persist due to inadequate training infrastructure, restrictive policies, and lack of localized resources especially in underrepresented regions. The review underscores the need for teacher education models that are context-sensitive, equity-driven, and globally informed. It calls for expanded research in the Global South, integrative policy frameworks, and institutional commitment to build a resilient, inclusive bilingual teaching workforce.
