Abstract

Infectious diseases, particularly those caused by the bacterium Staphylococcus aureus, pose a serious health issue in Indonesia. Strains of this bacterium are resistant to several antibiotics, making treatment challenging. Therefore, the use of herbal medicines such as garlic, which contain antibacterial compounds, has become a popular alternative treatment. This study aims to compare the effectiveness of single bulb garlic (Allium sativum Linn) and multiple bulbs garlic (Allium sativum) extracts as antibacterials against the growth of Staphylococcus aureus. The method used was disc diffusion (Kirby-Bauer) on Mueller-Hinton agar media with the administration of single and multiple bulb garlic extracts at concentrations of 6.25%, 12.5%, 25%, 50%, and 100%. The results of the study show that the single bulb garlic extract significantly outperforms the multiple bulbs garlic extract in terms of effectiveness. The diameter of the inhibition zone at a concentration of 100% single bulb garlic extract is 24.5, while that of the multiple bulb garlic extract is 28.5. Both types of garlic are effective as antibacterials, with the optimal concentration being 100%. However, the antibacterial activity in single bulb garlic is superior to that in multiple bulbs garlic. Therefore, single bulb garlic could serve as an effective alternative treatment.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Infectious diseases are still one of the most common health problems. One of the infectious bacterias is Klebsiella pneumoniae. These bacteria have started to become resistant so other alternative treatments are needed. Indonesian people often use herbs including garlic. Garlic has active antibacterial compounds. Two types of garlic that are often use are single and multi bulb garlic. There has been no study comparing single and multi bulb garlic to Klebsiella pneumoniae. To compare the effectiveness of single bulb garlic (Allium sativum L.) and multi bulb garlic (Allium sativum) extracts as antibacterial against Klebsiella pneumoniae. This research is laboratory experimental research. Antibacterial effectiveness test using disc diffusion method on single and multi bulb garlic extracts with concentration of 6.25% ; 12.50% ; 25% ; 50% ; 100%. Single bulb garlic extract produced average inhibition zone diameter 1mm; 1.75mm; 2mm; 2.75mm; 4.12mm while multi bulb garlic extract produced 1mm; 1.75mm; 2mm; 2.75mm; 4.12mm at concentration 6.25% ; 12.50% ; 25% ; 50% ; 100%. From macro observations and Mann Whitney test, there was no significant difference (p>0.05) between single and multi bulb garlic. Single and multi bulb garlic have no significant difference as antibacterial.

Abstract

Mountain climbing is a popular activityinspite of the high risk of accidents such as serious injuries and even death. In the event of an accident, mountain tour guides are often the first to deal with victims Therefore, performing first aid is a compulsory skill for a montain tour guide. In Indonesia, performing first aid is part of the national standard for working competency for mountain tour guides. The Community Service Program (PKM) from the University of Surabaya (Ubaya) aims to improve the skills of mountain tour guides in performing first aid. We considered training with VR as more efficient as it allows simulation of dangerous conditions on the mountain without risk to training participants and can be accessed at any time. We used a qualitative approach that begins with identifying the skills needed, preparing training substances, taking videos , video editing, training and evaluation. The outcome of this PKM is improvement in the skills of mountain guides in P3K which is expected to mitigate the risk of fatalities for mountain climbers who experienced accidents. Training and evaluation prove that training with VR is effective in improving accident handling competencies, providing a sustainable solution for repeated training for guides with limited time constraints.
