Abstract

2020 is a very challenging year because of the covid-19 pandemic and this completely changed the music education landscape. In the past, learning musical instruments could be done face to face, now it is impossible. If no action is taken, this situation could cause stress among students, especially those who learning gamelan ensemble instruments. Unlike other musical instruments, the ensemble gamelan is expensive and student cant afford to buy it. That is why set of gamelan is only owned by the university and placed in the faculty only. Due to this, students who live far away are unable to practice their gamelan instrument due to movement control order these days. Therefore, this study introduces Gamelan E-Learning Techniques, which is the concept of learning gamelan basic hand techniques using a simulation methods for keromong, gambang, saron and gendang. The uniqueness of this study is due to the emphasis on the basic hand techniques of gamelan. By using google class application as well, lecturers can upload learning videos as well as assessment of student game techniques online can be done. This study uses experimental case study method with qualitative approach. The participants consisted of second semester of 36 students who attended the AME 3082 gamelan course at Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI).

Abstract

More than a century ago, the enchanting tea-picking songs enjoyed widespread popularity among the residents of Yangxin in China. These songs served as a source of entertainment within the tea plantation quarters. Folk music artists subsequently reworked these melodies, transforming them into short tunes for collective singing and dancing during the Lantern Festival. The integration of Huangmei tea-picking opera with the "lantern opera" further shaped the musical identity of Yangxin tea-picking opera. This research aims to analyze the features of zhuhu music and its contribution to the musical culture of the Yangxin community, with a particular emphasis on analyzing the music's characteristics and its cultural significance. The study will also delve into the evolving status of zhuhu music within contemporary Yangxin society. Employing an ethnographic research design, I combines participant observation and interviews with her own field experiences to provide a comprehensive account of traditional zhuhu performance practices in Yangxin tea-picking opera. Through a musicological analysis of zhuhu's repertoire, the paper uncovers the uniqueness of zhuhu music and traces changes in its traditional form, style, and function, linking these shifts to broader socio-cultural transformations. In approaching the study of this musical performance, I draw upon theories from the field of ethnomusicology. Building on my preliminary investigation of zhuhu music, I shaped the study by considering theoretical insights from various scholars and incorporating my perspectives. The paper will discuss pertinent theories applied to analyze the music of zhuhu as it accompanies Yangxin tea-picking opera. This research not only contributes to ethnomusicological theory and methodology but also deepens our understanding of the musical culture surrounding Yangxin tea-picking opera in China.

Abstract

This paper explored the fundamental theoretical aspects involved in creating a comprehensive teaching module tailored for undergraduate students in China, with a specific emphasis on Chinese ancient poetry art songs. The process of constructing an effective teaching module was intricate, demanding a thorough exploration of various models and educational theories that laid the foundation for its development. The paper offered an overview of the theoretical framework employed in this undertaking, incorporating the ADDIE Model and key educational theories such as Jean Piaget's Constructivist Theory, Lev Vygotsky's Sociocultural Theory, and Howard Gardner's Multiple Intelligences. The ADDIE Model provided a structured approach to module development, guiding the systematic design, implementation, and evaluation phases to ensure that teaching materials were well-organized, efficient, and adaptable to diverse learning environments. Furthermore, the paper delved into the educational theories influencing the design of the teaching module. Piaget's Constructivist Theory emphasized active learning through hands-on experiences, Vygotsky's Sociocultural Theory underscored the role of social interaction and cultural context in learning, emphasizing collaborative learning experiences, and Gardner's Multiple Intelligences theory recognized the diversity of students' cognitive strengths, emphasizing the need for varied instructional strategies to cater to different learning styles. Through the integration of these theoretical foundations, this research aimed to develop a comprehensive, engaging, and effective educational resource tailored to the unique needs and learning preferences of students. The anticipated outcome of the teaching module was to enable educators to cultivate a greater understanding and appreciation of Chinese ancient poetry art songs among students.

Abstract

Jazz reharmonization techniques are a well-established area of focus in Western music. However, their application to non-Western genres, such as Malay Asli music, is, at best, an unexplored area of music. This disconnect is rooted in the absence of a theoretical model, one which exists within a broader Eurocentric approach to music pedagogy that privileges Western harmony. Jazz reharmonization of Malay Asli presents challenges in cross-cultural reinterpretation and hybrid learning. This study aims to develop and evaluate a guidebook on jazz guitar reharmonization techniques to be applied in Malay Asli music. It treats the guide’s pedagogical efficacy in a cross-idiomatic context while maintaining the genre’s stylistic integrity—A qualitative case study with five jazz guitarists following a structured method book. Data consisted of assessments of performance before and after instruction, participant reflections, and semi-structured interviews. Using ISO 9241-11 measurements—efficiency, effectiveness, and satisfaction—observational analysis and participant feedback were used to measure usability. Participants exhibited improved fluency and flexibility in processing Malay Asli melodies in jazz. They recommend the guide’s poetic and flexible approach as a tool for mastering complex harmonic ideas while keeping the central idea in Malay Asli music intact. The classification of jazz harmony in stages allowed for gradual integration into their normal structural perception, which complemented their understanding of both practices. Analysis implemented through usability testing found overall acceptance of the direct scope of instructions, ordering of steps needed, and appropriate application. The study's results demonstrated how jazz reharmonization can be potent in enhancing creativity versatility within the framework of Malay Asli music and closing its traditional monopoly barriers to cross-cultural engagement through creativity. This study addresses the larger conversation of inclusive music pedagogy by connecting jazz harmony and Malay Asli aesthetics. Further engagement in hybrid music learning could involve interactive tutorials or similar digital tools explored through future research.
