Abstract

Writing conversations in English is challenging for most ESL students. Concentration more on other skills, writing seems lagged behind. Indeed, writing is an art done under particular conditions that necessitates more elaboration and clarity compared to other skills. Writing creatively needs to be improved in gaining students’ higher order thinking skill. One of the forms of writing is dialogue. This study focuses on writing medical dialogue for midwifery students. The midwifery students must be creative in writing the dialogue based on the specific topics given. They wrote two kinds of conversation including conversation of arranged admission and conversation of patient suffering from urine infection. The classroom action research was used to find out the students’ difficulties and how do the deal with the difficult topics in medical conversation (dialogues). There are 2 cycles in this case. The treatments are planning, implementing, observation, reflections. The findings showed that the students have difficulties in writing basic dialogue and also they faced difficulties in writing conversations without clues. The process was stopped in the second cycle because the students pass the maximum criteria. In the future, this study will be published in the accredited local journals and it will be useful for the medical students especially midwifery students, lecturers and institutions.

Abstract

Reading is one of the skills used to measure the level of academic success. There is a mutual relationship between reading skills and academic success. Students from a variety of backgrounds struggle with reading skill. The purpose of this study was to investigate how graphic organizers can be used in enhancing reading comprehension. Graphic organizers (GOs) facilitate reading comprehension by providing clear visualizations of ideas and facilitating student reflection. This study constitutes an attempt to elaborate the research evidence regarding the usefulness of GOs on text learning and the various types of graphic organizers, which use different conventions to communicate information and are classified in various ways. It also summarizes research findings and issues on the use of GOs in text types namely narrative, descriptive, recount, procedure and report. The result showed that in using graphic organizers in reading comprehension, students were successful in identifying the structures and elements of the text types. By using the graphic organizers, the students were able to understand the reading concepts. In utilizing literacy strategies like graphic organizers, student learning and independence is increased and they are more prepared to practice these skills independently.

Abstract

ESL students always encounter the issue of solving complicated problems in learning English. Various problem may occur during the learning process including speaking, listening, writing and reading. The most complicated issues are often faced by the studentswho learn English for the specific purpose for instance English for law, English for tourism, English for business or English for medical purpose. The problems may dealing with types of expression, vocabularies, standard and formal structures that will be used most of all in a specific field. This purpose of this study was to implement the problem solution strategy in the medical field especially for midwifery students in Akademi Kebidanan Panca Bakti Pontianak. The midewifery students were trained to be able to solve the problems regarding with the health issues. This study constitute an attempt to identify the common problems and how to solve by using problem solution strategy. The most common issues found were dealing with terminologies and the risk signs during pregnancy. The result showed that by using problem solution strategy, students were successful in solving the health problems. They were elaborate the way how to deal with the health sign during pregnancy for risk sign dealing with weighing the mother, the risk sign if a mother has a high fever, the risk sign if a mother has a high blood pressure, the risk sign if a mother has an abnormal pulse rate and the risk sign if a mother grows fast or slowly. By understanding how to solve the problems, the midwifery students will be more professional.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the process and learning activities of implementing PjBL in writing based on literature and students' writing performance after implementing PjBL. The qualitative method is used in this study. Data collection used observation checklists and interviews. Data is analyzed with represented, interpreted meaning, and reflected. The results show that the lecturer has carried out the stages of PjBL activities in accordance with theoretical references, starting from the planning stage to concluding. On the other hand, the results of students' writing performance showed an increase. This increase can be seen in the learning outcomes after implementing PjBL. Then, implementing PjBL helps students determine topics and ideas for them to put into their writing. The collaborative work offered by PjBL is also beneficial for students in writing. Finally, PjBL is recommended to be applied in learning, developing the targeted primary skills and skills included in "success skills."

Abstract

Argumentative text is one of the texts that contains arguments or statements about a certain thing or phenomenon. This text serves to convince the reader, express the author's view, and prove the truth. This research is a Classroom Action Research; the aim is to see the writing process of STBA Pontianak Semester IV students in Essay Writing class by using CER (Claim-Evidence-Reasoning) framework. This argumentative text also discusses students' perspectives about their cultural background; the three major sub-tribes in West Kalimantan namely; Dayaknese, Malay and Chinese/Tionghoa. The results  are 1) The Dayak Ethnic Group stated that the tradition of "Nyocok" or drinking Tuak as a symbol of kinship or solidarity during the certain traditional events. 2) The Malay Ethnic Group, especially Sambas stated that the tradition of “Kemponan” has been abandoned and it is only a habitual mechanism and 3) The Chinese Ethnic Group stated that the "Tatung" attraction serves as a communal healing ritual, which strengthens collective identity and the continuity of beliefs in the Chinese community.
