Abstract

This research was conducted to measure whether there was any correlation or not between learning motivation and reading comprehension achievement. The population of this research was first grade students of MAN 9 Pondok Kopi East Jakarta that consisted of 99 students that were divided into three classes. The total sample was 40 students taken from the total population by simple random sampling. The method used in this research was survey which means that this is a quantitative research that uses questionnaire to a lot of objects. In this research, the writer gave questionnaires that consist of forty questions to those students in order to know their learning motivation. And then the writer gave multiple choice tests, to know their reading comprehension achievement. The result of the calculation of correlation coefficient Phi with 5% level of significant from the degree of freedom (df) = N is 3, 841 and the interpretation of the score 2 count and2 table indicated that2 count (32, 727) >2 table (3,841). Based on the result above, the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. It means there is correlation between learning motivation and reading comprehension achievement at the X grade students of MAN 9 Pondok Kopi East Jakarta.

Abstract

The research aims to describe the cultural values ​​contained in the film Leap Year and to describe the characterizations of the two main characters of the film. The research method used is descriptive qualitative to analyze the elements of cultural values ​​and characterizations in this film. Analysis of cultural elements was carried out using the Koentjaraningrat theory, while characterization analysis was carried out using the Tasrif theory. Observations show that this film displays many cultural values ​​in the form of belief systems, social systems, economic and livelihood systems, language and communication systems, as well as art systems, but there is no cultural element in the form of knowledge systems and technology systems. The observations also show that the characterization is carried out by the concept of physical descriptions, depiction of the way of thinking and awareness, reactions to an event, direct analysis from the author and other people's conversations about the characters, but there is no depiction of characterizations through environmental discussions.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThe presence of social media has influenced the use of foreign languages, especially English, in daily communication, especially among Generation Y or the millennials. The use of foreign languages is very diverse, ranging from the use of technological terms such as download, print, copy and paste, to the combination of basic Indonesian words with English affixes such as pelukable and unfaedah. The merging of the two languages is known as code switching and code mixing. This study is aimed at analyzing the types of code switching uttered by a tour guide at the Fatahillah museum in Jakarta. Analysis of the type of code switching is done by using Hoffman's theory. The results showed that there were three types of code switching; tag swiching, inter-sentential swictching and intra-sentential switching. There were also eighteen code switching utterances in the conversation between the tour guide and the museum visitors. And of the eighteen utterances, the most common type of code switching is tag code switching. Keywords: code switching, types of code switching

Abstract

ABSTRACT   Translating movies is not just about changing words; it's about understanding the culture behind them. Cultural words, in particular, can be tricky for translators because they carry deep meanings rooted in a specific culture. This research was carried out using language analysis method with both Indonesian and English subtitle script of the first episode of Gadis Kretek series as the data. This research aims at finding out what cultural words used and what translation procedures applied in translating the cultural words. Cultural word classification theory by Alonso and Ponte is used to analyze the cultural words found in the subtitle and translation procedure theory by Newmark is used to find out what translation procedures are used in translating the cultural words. From the 56 cultural words found in the first episode of Gadis Kretek series, the most frequently discovered type of cultural word is stereotype, with the number of 22 words or 39,2%, whereas the least frequently discovered type of cultural word is cultural heritage, with only 1 word or 2% of the total cultural words. The other three types of cultural word namely society, languages and social interactions share the same number and percentage of eleven words or 19,6%. Among the twelve procedures suggested by the theory, only five specific ones are applied in translating this subtitle. The first most frequently applied procedure is literal translation with the number of 23 words or 41,1%. The second most frequently used procedure is cultural equivalent with the number of 18 words or 32,1%. The third most frequently used procedure is deletion with 11 words or 19,6%. And the two least used procedures are transference which is 3 words or 5,4% and neutralization which is only one or 1,8%.

Abstract

Analysing films involves more than just examining character arcs or plot points; it also requires an understanding of the cultural values embedded within the narrative. The primary objective of this study is to identify similarities and differences between the depiction of gender roles and cultural expectations in the film and those prevalent in Indonesian traditional culture, and to understand how they intersect or diverge. Using a descriptive qualitative method, this research applies Charles S. Peirce’s semiotic analysis to examine gender roles and cultural expectations in Mulan, while conducting library research to explore gender roles in Indonesian society. The study reveals that there are notable similarities between the two contexts, particularly regarding the roles of women as household keepers, their loyalty to family, and their submissiveness to patriarchal expectations. However, both narratives also reflect evolving challenges to these traditional norms. In conclusion, the study highlights the parallels between traditional gender expectations in Mulan and Indonesian culture, while acknowledging the gradual shift toward gender role redefinition in both societies. Abstract

This study explores how popular culture is reflected in the songs Anti-Hero by Taylor Swift, Happier Than Ever by Billie Eilish, and Traitor by Olivia Rodrigo. The research aims to identify which social trends are depicted in these songs and analyze their similarities and differences in reflecting societal concerns. Using a descriptive qualitative method, the study applies the framework of T.A. Writer, which identifies six key social trends in modern society: mental health awareness and reducing stigma, redefining family and relationships, digital detox and mindful technology use, individual activism and social responsibility, sustainable and ethical consumerism, and shifting work culture to remote and hybrid models. The findings reveal that not all six social trends are present in the selected songs. Each song reflects different aspects of societal change, with mental health issues and redefining relationships emerging as the most prominent themes. While Anti-Hero focuses on self-perception and emotional struggles, Happier Than Ever portrays personal growth after a toxic relationship, and Traitor reflects betrayal and emotional turmoil. The analysis highlights how pop music serves as a mirror of contemporary issues, particularly in the realms of mental health and interpersonal relationships. These songs resonate with audiences by providing an emotional connection to real-life struggles, reinforcing the role of music in shaping and reflecting cultural narratives. This research contributes to the understanding of music as an expression of social change and personal identity. Keywords: pop culture, song lyric, social trends
