Abstract

This paper proposes the semantics of product functions in a private university in Indonesia. The so-called product of the university is the Vision and Mission that carries intended and aligned message to its target readers/customers. Therefore, this research aims at mapping the semantic profile of University’s Vision and Mission. Analysing this issue, qualitative-descriptive method was implemented to break-down the message of the product function. The results showed that the product clusters the message into general structure of the product, open word class clustering, and word clustering based on meaning association. The semantics then voluntarily specifies particular strategies based on its meaning association. Additionally, the findings suggested that the product function was discovered by analysing the descriptive words in the Vision and Missions. From this discovery, the product can then be mapped into its function class and type. This then specifies possible strategies implemented in “marketing” the product. From the result, it can be concluded that mapping out the message and strategy of the product can best aid universities in improving their language design in every product they have.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the binary opposition present in the characters of Wednesday and Enid in the Wednesday Addams series season 1: episode 1 and 4. This research finds the binary opposition between these characters and uncovers their meanings, drawing upon Levi Strauss’s theory of binary oppositions. The descriptive qualitative method is employed, and scenes and English subtitles from the Wednesday Addams series season 1: episodes 1 and 4, available on Netflix, are used as the data source. The research identifies four opposing mental states: darkness and lightness, taciturnity and talkativeness, rigid and flexible, and indifference and care. Wednesday Addams exhibits unique mental states compared to other characters, particularly Enid, her best friend. Each of these four opposing mental states carries meaning beyond their mental states. Abstract

This study intends to investigate the level of viewer engagement in co-produced video. The focus is primarily on the performance of the video content. How video engagement promotes video’s effectiveness is an issue of practices in the measurement and improvement of persuasive technology. The video content, as a multimodal text, has the power to change viewer’s attitudes and behaviors. In addition, studies noted that viewer engagement is necessary to determine the success of video content creation for specific purposes, for example, creating brand equity. Using the Video Dokumenter Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat Program Insentif Kemendikbud 2022 as a case study, Kalodikis’ model was applied to measure audience engagement. Questionnaires collected at a single point in time were used to illustrate participant’s assumptions. A cross-sectional qualitative study with interaction analysis was applied to describe video engagement metrics and how they correlated to participants’ evaluations of the video. The results highlight multiple images displayed in sequential order and show that audio reinforces the message conveyed in the visual and verbal elements of the scheme. Message framing is created through frame per second, image resolution, bit depth, and time. The obtained results indicate that there is still room for improvement. Abstract

This research aims to decode the sign system encoded in online dating hodiernal expressions. The decoding process involves Barthes' semiotic analysis of myths, structured in expressions, which reveals the connotative meaning and code system underlying these expressions. A qualitative descriptive method was used to analyze the data. The signs were decoded using Barthes' semiotic code to reveal their denotative meaning, which was then expanded into connotative meaning and the code system to expose the myths embedded in the expressions. The findings suggested that the myths were constructed through relations among connotative meanings and code systems. Four of the five code systems were identified; the semantic code system was the majority code, creating connotative meanings, and the others were proaretic, cultural, and symbolic codes. From this research, it can be concluded that the encoded message in expressions carries not only their literal meaning but also their relation to the outside world, namely, their connotative meanings. Therefore, these findings are expected to facilitate the interpretation of all recognized signs, thereby making meaning-making easier.
