Abstract

Abstract: The objective of this descriptive research was to find out about students’ ability in understanding meaning of phrasal verbs. The sample of this research was the fourth semester students of English Department of Riau University. There were 38 students participate as the sample of this research. The data were quantitative and the instrument of the research was a set of multiple choice test which consist of 50 questions regarding the meaning of phrasal verbs. The data were analyzed by calculating the score of the students in answering the test and classifying them to a certain level of ability using Harris formula. The results were that out of 38 students, 2 students (5.26%) were in excellent level of ability, 11 students (28.95%) were in good level of ability, 7students (18.42%) were in average level of ability, and for the most part, 18 students(47.36%) were in poor level of ability. In addition, the average score of the students in understanding meaning of phrasal verbs was 51.37. It meant that the students’ ability in understanding meaning of English phrasal verbs was in the average level of ability. This research recommended the students to make themselves familiar with more elaborated use of phrasal verb. Students can also comprehend more about the conceptualization of phrasal verbs in many contexts by practicing writing and speaking that would require them to use phrasal verbs. Further research can focus on studying each subtopic in detais. Other researchers can also focus on how to overcome the high level of difficulties of English phrasal verbs materials.Keywords: ability, understanding, phrasal verbs

Abstract

Abstract: This correlational research aimed to find out if there is any correlation between reading comprehension ability and writing ability of the fourth semester students of English Study Program FKIP Riau University. The population was the fourth semester students of English Study Program FKIP Riau University, they consisted of three classes: class A, class B and class C. In addition, class A was taken as the sample of this research. The writer used cluster sampling technique to decide the sample. The instrument of this research was two sets of tests; reading comprehension test and writing test. The students’ works were graded by the three raters and analyzed using pearson product moment formula. After the data were calculated, it was found that the value of rxy was 0.789. Then the writer compares value of rxy with r table with level of significance 5% (0.388) and 1% (0.496). Finally it was found that the value rxy of this study (0.789) was higher than the value of r in table product moment with level of significance 5% and 1%. It means that the alternative hypothesis was accepted, where it means that there is significant correlation between reading comprehension ability and writing ability of the fourth semester students of English Study Program FKIP Riau University was accepted. Then the writer also interpret the value of rxy with table interpretation of the value r by Best and Khan (2006) where the value of rxy (0.789) was in between 0.600 – 0.800 or in other words it was in substantial level. In conclusion, the correlation between reading comprehension ability and writing ability of the fourth semester students of English Study Program FKIP Riau University was significant in substantial level.Keywords: Reading Comprehension Ability, Writing Ability, Correlation, Pearson Product Moment

Abstract

Abstract: English is the most popular and most spoken language in the world which has been used effectively in many developing countries. One of the first skills that students should be learnt in English is listening. In learning language, students use listening to began the process of learning to comprehend and produce language. The problems that usually faced by students while listening are lack of control over the speed at which speakers speak, inability to concentrate (topic, effort, technical problems), and also established learning habit in listening perfectionism.This descriptive research was conducted in order to find out the students’ ability in listening comprehension on descriptive text. The data were collected using test in the form of multiple choice. The test covered four components of listening comprehension question; finding main idea, finding detail, identifying inference, and identifying restatement.The sample of this research was the second semester students of English study program of FKIP-UR who had passed English Listening1 subject in first semester. They consisted of 3 classes: A, B, and C, and using cluster sampling technique, class B was chosen as the sample of this research. Before the data were collected, the try out was conducted in order to make sure that the test was good and valid. There were 7 rejected items and those items were revised before having been distributed to the sample. From the data analysis, it was found out that the students’ ability in listening comprehension on descriptive text was in poor level with the average score 48.33. The result of the students’ ability on listening comprehension of descriptive text was in poor level for finding main idea (44.81),identifying restatement (40.37), while finding detail was in good level (60.37), and for identifying inference was in average level (50.00).Based on the finding, it was suggested that the students need to improve their listening ability by practicing more on listening exercise and should motivate themselves to listen more listening materials. Other researchers can also focus on how to overcome the high level of difficulty of listening comprehension materials, particularly in listening to descriptive text.Key words: Ability, Listening, Comprehension, Descriptive text
