Abstract

Abstract: This research is aimed to improve the ability of tenth grade students at SMAN 4 Pekanbaru in writing recount text by using ‘Writing in the Here and Now’ strategy and to find out what factors cause the improvements. This research is based on the problem faced by the students in which they tend to be passive in the classroom while learning writing. The research participant was36 students in X9 class at SMAN 4 Pekanbaru in academic year 2014-2015 chosen by random sampling technique. This research was divided into two cycles; first cycle consisted of three treatments and second cycle consisted of two treatments. In collecting data, there were two kinds of data that were used; quantitative data: using a pre-test and two post-tests, and qualitative data: using observation sheet and field notes. The research findings indicated that using ‘Writing in the Here and Now’ strategy as one of strategies to help students’ writing competences can improve the ability of tenth grade (X9) students at SMAN 4 Pekanbaru in writing recount text. It is proven by the improvement of students’ score from 67.5 in Pre-Test, 74.7 in Post-Test 1, to 80.2 in Post Test 2. Many factors that caused the improvements of students’ scores and habit in the teaching and learning process but the most important one is it is from themselves who have already understood and enjoyed writing recount text which brought their average score into 80.2.If the teacher would like to use this strategy, it is better to give interesting topics for the students to write and somehow this strategy needs a good atmosphere to make the students comfort and enjoy while writing their experience.Keywords: ‘Writing in the Here and Now’ Strategy, Writing Ability, Recount Text.

Abstract

Abstract: This research was intended to know whether the use of Team Game Tournament (TGT) can improve students’ reading skill in narrative text on the first grade at SMA N 4 Pekanbaru. Besides, this research was also aimed to identify the factors that could improve student’s reading skill through narrative text. To collect the quantitative data, the writer used a test consisted of 40 multiple questions in pre-test, post-test I, and post-test II and qualitative data asking the collaborator to fill the observation sheet and field notes. It was proven by the average score of pre-test was 63.05. then in post-test I, it improved to 71.11 and incredibly improved to 80.06 in post-test II. The factors which cause the improvement are as follows: (!) it can improve their high motivation in learning reading; (2) the students used to have higher competition because they had to compete each other in the tournament to answer the questions;(3) the students could have a chance to help the member of the group who didn’t understand about the material. Based on the finding, it was concluded that the use of Team Game Tournament (TGT) can improve students’ reading skill.Keywords: Team Game Tournament, reading skill, narrative text

Abstract

Abstract: The objective of this descriptive research was to find out about students’ ability in understanding meaning of phrasal verbs. The sample of this research was the fourth semester students of English Department of Riau University. There were 38 students participate as the sample of this research. The data were quantitative and the instrument of the research was a set of multiple choice test which consist of 50 questions regarding the meaning of phrasal verbs. The data were analyzed by calculating the score of the students in answering the test and classifying them to a certain level of ability using Harris formula. The results were that out of 38 students, 2 students (5.26%) were in excellent level of ability, 11 students (28.95%) were in good level of ability, 7students (18.42%) were in average level of ability, and for the most part, 18 students(47.36%) were in poor level of ability. In addition, the average score of the students in understanding meaning of phrasal verbs was 51.37. It meant that the students’ ability in understanding meaning of English phrasal verbs was in the average level of ability. This research recommended the students to make themselves familiar with more elaborated use of phrasal verb. Students can also comprehend more about the conceptualization of phrasal verbs in many contexts by practicing writing and speaking that would require them to use phrasal verbs. Further research can focus on studying each subtopic in detais. Other researchers can also focus on how to overcome the high level of difficulties of English phrasal verbs materials.Keywords: ability, understanding, phrasal verbs
