Abstract

Abstract: The Handmaid’s Tale is a science fiction novel with a dystopian theme written by Margaret Atwood. The novel narrates the life of a woman named Offred, who becomes a handmaid, a term for women serving as baby-making machines under the rule of the Gilead regime. This research deconstructs Northrop Frye’s archetypal romance to reveal the symbolic resolution in The Handmaid’s Tale through the four narrative movement archetypes of romance developed by Northrop Frye. Based on analysis, it is concluded that by examining its formal narrative structure, The Handmaid’s Tale possesses a romantic narrative structure that represents a symbolic resolution of unresolved social contradictions. This symbolic resolution embodies the wish fulfillment of the author, Margaret Atwood, who desires the disappearance of authoritarian regimes from society.
