Abstract

Nowadays, the integrated use of technology is inevitable in the digital world, including instructional process. The present study reports on the findings of English teachers teaching using CALL approach in suburban areas in Indonesia specifically in Bangkalan as one of the underdeveloped regencies in East Java province. From a total of 50 respondents across the regency, 25 English teachers from 15 schools responded intensively in answering the online questionnaire with closed-ended and open-ended questions. The researcher attempted to find out the teachers’ efficacy, the concrete form of CALL approach, and downsides when applying CALL during instructional process. The results indicated that in the digital era, those teachers already implemented CALL approach a simple manner despite limitations related to operational activities and facilities. Thus, this paper argues that the results of the research must be addressed with policies by the stakeholders that suburban teachers need to explore CALL approach more deeply as they are restricted merely in simple ways of CALL approach.

Focusing on the three aspects, this article seeks to find out the relations of how CALL becomes such a way to promote secondary school teachers in Indonesia to be globalized by using technology in language instruction. Three main aspects of Vygotskian thought is used to analyze how technology-enhanced learning can impact to the EFL instruction: mediation, social learning, and genetic analysis. Abstract

English for Specific Purposes (ESP) is an English learning that incorporates elements of the learner's specific needs and the context of the work environment. ESP for maritime or shipping is still not developed much in practice, especially in research. In Bangkalan city itself, there is a Shipping Vocational Middle School, but the development of supporting material for Maritime English is not optimal. This study aims to develop specific teaching materials to prepare maritime or sailing Vocational High School students to be able to equip themselves with work communication competencies in English. The R & D model used was the Language Development Program applied by Yalden (1987) comprising identifying the current situation and problems, referring it to the theory, obtaining needs analysis information, focus group discussion, writing manuscript, expert judgment, revision, tryout, and validation. It has been found that the language needs needed by seafarers are mostly in the context of coordination language onboard with the emphasis on speaking and reading, making notional-functional expressions are required to include in the materials. The results of the needs analysis are going to be used to next step, i.e. materials development.

Abstract

The Pre-service teacher program is a compulsory subject at STKIP PGRI Bangkalan with the aim of giving students a real experience to do the learning process in class. Pre-service teacher program itself is divided into 2 courses, namely Pre-service teacher program I (where students are trained to make learning plans on campus followed by microteaching) and Pre-service teacher program II (where students are actually deployed to schools for real teaching practices. This research aims to analyze the extent to which the Pre-Service Teacher Program has contributed to the development of professionalism of prospective teachers or preservice teacher professional development from the perspective of Vygotsky's sociocultural theory. The perspectives to be used in this study are genetic law of development, zone of proximal development, and mediation. Students as prospective teachers must develop themselves in this practicum before they become real teachers (in-service teacher). There are three pre-service students involved in this study in different schools. The data was obtained through document collection, mainly lesson plans, and through interview. The results show that there is an apparent progress in between the two courses of preservice teacher program in terms of pedagogical skills. The mediation between mentor teacher and lecturer supervisor opened a great opportunity for sharing knowledge and ideas in teaching. The pre-service teachers were benefited through sharing of in-service teachers’ experiences, whereas the in-service teachers were benefited through pre-service teachers’ fresh ideas in teaching.
