Abstract

Human resource flexibility has attracted lots of research attention, but limited papers categorically address the benefits of HR flexibility to employees. This paper ispurposely crafted to address the knowledge gap and bridge the perception and expectation gap from both sides regarding the benefit of HR flexibility. The research uses a mixed method approach. First used questionnaire-based survey, but and second interviewed 10 employees randomly selected from organisations that participate in the survey. About 80 senior HR personnel participated in the survey representing the views of 40 private and public organisations. A stratified random sampling technique was used using two organisation directories as sample frame. The outcome of the study discovers differences in the practice of HR flexibility between private and public organisations in the Gambia. The outcome also dictates that, the views expressed by the senior HR personnel cannot represent the position of the employees. HR flexibility has economic and social benefits for the organisation and employees, therefore further study is recommended to delve deep into the issues.

Abstract

The research aimed to test the new measures of employee empowerment in a collectively social oriented society. The study applied questionnaire-based survey to obtain data and test the relationship between employee empowerment and organisational performance. A total of 80 completed questionnaires from the senior HR personnel from 40 organisations in the Gambia took part in the survey. Ten employees were engaged in a face-to-face interview, 2 private and 8 public organisations from among the 40 organisations that participated. Both SPSS and SmartPLS were utilised to analyse data. MGA is used to determine the difference private and public organisations. The study has indicated a significant relationship between employee empowerment and organisational performance. The findings revealed a small but not significant difference between the private and public organisations in their definition of employee empowerment in the Gambia based on MGA report. The findings discovered that the social nature of employees cannot be disputed, and a strong recognition of employees promotes organisation performance. HR department and organisational flexibility relates more to employee’s empowerment and has effect on attitude and behaviour. The study recommends further large-scale research in other environments outside the Gambia.

Abstract

The study assesses the influence of governance on competence and partnership in university education in The Gambia using the situation as a mediating factor in a trilateral relationship. The study applied a questionnaire survey design using three universities as the study population. The PLS-SEM approach assesses the measurements and structural models. The study's findings established that governance significantly influences competence and partnership in university education in The Gambia. However, the situation as an environmental factor lacks the mediation capacity in the trilateral relationship. The study outcome shows differences, but only two were significantly contextual in relation to governance. The study recommends further research that adopts a qualitative approach to help provide a proper understanding of university governance in The Gambia.

Research aim: This study aimed to assess the influence of motivation on employee performance within the Gambia Ports Authority (GPA). Design/Methode/Approach: A descriptive survey design was employed, utilizing structured questionnaires to gather primary data. The study employed simple random sampling to select participants. Statistical analysis was conducted using SPSS software, including reliability testing via Cronbach’s Alpha, Pearson’s correlation, and multiple regression analysis to test hypotheses. Research Finding: The research highlights the significant impact of various motivational factors on employee performance within GPA. Training, organizational prioritization, and investment in development programs were found to positively influence performance (89.10%). Additionally, positive working conditions (81.70%), employee recognition (79.90%), and delegation of responsibility (74.90%) were identified as crucial contributors to an optimal work environment. The study also underscores the motivating effects of salary, bonuses, and benefits, emphasizing the importance of compensation structures. Moreover, positive relationships with superiors, peer dynamics, and effective management styles were recognized as pivotal in driving employee performance and organizational success. Theoretical contribution/Originality: This study contributes to the understanding of the relationship between motivation and employee performance, specifically within the context of GPA. It emphasizes the importance of various motivational factors and their impact on organizational outcomes. Practitioner/Policy implication: The findings suggest the necessity for GPA to implement a comprehensive strategy addressing motivational factors to cultivate a highly productive workforce. Recommendations include conducting a thorough assessment of the current motivational landscape within the organization to identify challenges and barriers hindering high motivation levels. Research limitation: One limitation of this study is its focus on GPA, which may limit the generalizability of findings to other organizational contexts. Additionally, reliance on self-reported data through questionnaires may introduce response bias.

Abstract

Research aim : This study addresses the impact of audit activity and internal control effectiveness on public finance management in The Gambia. Utilising empirical studies and theoretical frameworks, the study delves into the intricate dynamics of financial governance. Design/Methode/Approach: The study used the purposive sampling method for its specificity, allowing the selection of relevant and valuable respondents. This approach acknowledges that certain individuals or groups possess the information required by the study and, thus, choose its respondents to provide the needed data. Research Finding: The study highlights the crucial role played by robust internal controls and effective audit practices in fostering financial transparency, accountability, and efficiency. The findings underscore specific challenges, including management's limited commitment to implementing audit recommendations. Theoretical contribution/Originality: This study makes a noteworthy contribution by validating theoretical frameworks, specifically Agency, Control, and Resource Dependency theories. The empirical findings align with these theories, showcases their applicability to the dynamics of public finance management in The Gambia. This validation enhances the theoretical understanding of how audit activities and internal controls operate within the context of a developing country like the Gambia. Practitionel/Policy implication: To enhance financial governance, the study recommends updating the Public Finance Act, developing a policy for audit recommendation implementation, empowering internal audit units, and establishing an investigative institution. Research limitation: The small sample size constraints may introduce potential biases, and the perspectives expressed may not fully represent the diversity of viewpoints in Gambia's public finance management and lack generalization potentials.

Abstract

Design/Methode/Approach: The study used a quantitative-survey research strategy getting information from individuals within GPA. Analysis of the data was conducted using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) analytical and SmartPLS tool. Research Finding: The hypothesis is supported which in turn indicates the path is significant between the independent and dependent variable. H1 (0.547, p < 0.05) describes the path between social media usage and employee performance. Theoretical contribution/Originality: The study revealed the necessity for GPA to adopt social media as a strategic communication tool for efficient dissemination of information within the organization and a means to empower employees. Theoretically, informed employees are more involved and engaged to serve the organisation. Practical/Policy implication:        The study will aid the implementation of a social media policy which will serve as a policy document to guide staff on how and when to use social media during official work hours. Research limitation: The findings of the study cannot be generalized with other SOEs as the study is limited to Gambia Ports Authority only. Keywords: Social Media, Gambia Ports Authority, Employee Performance.
