Abstract

The Multiple Intelligences Theory (MIT), proposed by Gardner (1983), claims that there are at least eight differenthuman intelligences. This new view of intelligence with emphasis on learner variable has been used in language learning andteaching settings. The theory stresses that if individual differences are taken into account and classroom activities arediversified, language learners can better improve their language skills. The present study investigates possible relationshipbetween L2 learners’ multiple intelligence (MI) and their writing performance. Thirty three female homogeneous Persianspeaking EFL learners participated in the study. The instruments used were the Multiple Intelligence Developmental AssessmentScales (MIDAS), an instrument designed by Shearer in 1996, and the participants' average scores on two writing tasks, as anindex of writing products. The correlational analysis of the results revealed a statistically significant relationship betweenparticipants' MI and their performance on writing. Furthermore, the results of regression analysis showed that among all eightintelligences, linguistic intelligence is the best predictor of writing performance. The findings suggest English teachers toconsider the role of MI in classes and provide more effective activities to help students improve second language writing ability.Possible implications of the findings for language teaching and teaching writing have been discussed.

Abstract

Expressionism in literature was a revolutionary movement against realism and naturalism. As a twentieth centurymovement, it is the subject of the inner world. Like most artistic movements, it is applied to lots of art forms including Paintings,Architecture, Cinema, and Music. Dramatists like Elmer Rice and Eugene O'Neill introduced Expressionism to AmericanLiterature. This paper is a comparative study of O'Neill's The Hairy Ape and Emperor Jones based on expressionism viewpoint. Its aim is to find the expressionistic features and to compare the similarities and differences between these two works. Thefeatures and principles of expressionism in drama include: structure (for example, one-act play), main focus on protagonist andhis inner conflicts, tragic ending, unnamed minor characters, employing music and light (as two prominent features ofexpressionism), applying symbols and colors, monologue and soliloquy or telegraphic dialogue, etc. In this paper, these werefeatures of analysis. The research revealed the fact that there are similarities and differences between the two pieces of dramain question. Although the two plays, Emperor Jones and The Hairy Ape written by one author (Eugene O'Neill) and in one periodof his life (1920-1921), and both are known as expressionist works, still there are some differences in applying expressionisticfeatures. The similarities and differences are discussed followed by some suggestion for further research.

Abstract

Hawthorne’s ‘The Birthmark’ is one of his short stories whose theme falls among the domain of experimenting humannature in the fields of art, religion, and science. Regardless of the birthmark itself which represents the Original Sin, a conflictbetween masculine attitude and feminine perspective toward perfection and beauty is artfully manifested in this story. The paperstudy employs the notions of the beautiful and the sublime according to Immanuel Kant’s Observations on the Feeling of theBeautiful and Sublime in which he puts forward the idea that different sexes possess different perceptions of events andenvironment. From his viewpoint, women are mostly capable to feel the beautiful and sympathy, while men, with their tendencyto perfection, possess and convey the feeling of the sublime. Several events, disputes and descriptions in ‘The Birthmark’,clearly exemplify women’s zeal for beauty and men’s seeking the perfection. Hawthorne proves that oversensitivity to perfectionand sublimity can be a destructive force for the beautiful. One should not defy nature to reconcile his or her internal desires.Within the quest to win perfection by means of limited power of science, the only winner is true love.

Abstract

Hawthorne’s ‘The Minister’s Black Veil’ is one of his short stories whose protagonist has sunk in a gloomy depression.Since most of the male characters in such stories follow a procedure for a type of self awareness (this may happen out of theplot, as in Mr. Hooper whose insight has occurred before the story begins), the result of their journey within themselves isdarkness and depression. The present study sought the footprint of true virtue in drawing the character into such deep thoughtsthat resulted in his everlasting coverage of his face by a black veil. One of the best approaches which proved the truth of theminister’s virtue was the definition that Immanuel Kant presented through his Observations on the Feelings of the Beautiful andSublime. Kant made use of the theory of the four temperaments which influence human mental and behavioral traits. In hisattitude, a melancholy is, among the other personality, the most virtuous and capable for the feeling of the sublime. Inaccordance with the characteristics represented by Kant for each temperament, reverend Mr. Hooper is regarded as amelancholy. With his deep thoughts, most realistic insight, and black moods, the minister of the story exhibits a truly virtuouspersonality.
