Abstract

This study explores the association between proactive work behavior (PWB), which is a mediator between employee grit and work effectiveness. Sixty-three employees of the Secretariat General and Directorates within the Directorate General of Transportation of the Indonesian Ministry of Transportation provided data for this research, which was collected through a questionnaire on a Likert scale. Structural equation modeling (SEM) results demonstrated that grit enhanced PWB, which in turn significantly impacted work effectiveness both directly and indirectly. It added to the process by which work effectiveness was impacted by grit. As a result, leaders have to establish the appropriate policies to support employee grit and PWB simultaneously. Therefore, additional research needs to be done in a wider range of sectors and organizations.

Abstract

Safety citizenship behavior (SCB) of the ship crew is essential to maritime safety. Therefore, using safety motivation as a mediating mechanism, this research attempts to understand and quantify the impact of safety leadership, social capital, and safety awareness on ship crew SCB. The study employs a causal design and survey methods in a quantitative manner. 120 crew members of passenger ships that were docked at Tanjung Priok Port in Jakarta made up the sample. A Likert scale questionnaire was utilized as the research tool for safety leadership, social capital, safety awareness, safety motivation, and SCB. Google Forms-formatted questionnaires were sent out by email and WhatsApp. Partial least squares (PLS)-based structural equation modeling (SEM) analysis was used to analyze the data. The study's findings indicate that safety leadership, social capital, safety awareness, and safety motivation all have a significant impact on SCB; additionally, safety leadership, social capital, and safety awareness all have a significant impact on safety motivation, which in turn has a significant impact on SCB through safety motivation. These results validate the novelty of the safety leadership, social capital, and safety awareness mediation model's effect on the SCB of passenger ship crew through safety motivation.

Abstract

This paper aims to find alternative policy strategies to improve seafarer safety behavior to reduce the potential for ship accidents. The activity uses literature studies supported by quantitative methods. Data is collected through relevant literature and key persons and analyzed using a logic model approach. The results show that one of the alternative strategic policies that can be considered to reduce seafarer accidents through improving seafarer safety behavior is a policy of improving the quality of resources through a special certification program for seafarers and supervisors. The safety certification program is designed for seafarers and supervisors with different materials, methods and instructors according to their respective job descriptions and lasts for 20 to 30 hours in five working days. These findings not only provide theoretical contributions to the development of transportation and public policy, but also have practical implications for shipping companies and the government.
