Abstract

Grammar is one of the language components that should be learned well by students. However, most of students still make a lot of mistakes especially in mastering expressions of preferences ; prefer…to, like ... better than, would rather… than, and would prefer … rather than. The aim of this study is to find out the students’ mastery of expressions of preferences and the easiest and the most difficult pereferences for them to master. Sixteen English education students of the second semester were the samples which they were given a set of multiple choices that they had to answer. The result showed that mean score of the students’ mastery is 60.62 which is classified into fair. The students’ mastery of expressions of preferences is 60.62 which is classified into fair. The easiest preference to master is preference prefer … to (67.96) and it is categorized into fair and the most difficult one is  preference would rather … than (53.56) and it is categorized into poor.

Abstract

This research aimed to determine the students’ mastery on constructing simple present tense of the English Education Department at STAIN Bengkalis and which part would be the easiest and the most difficult to master. The subjects of this study were 19 first-semester students who were given a multiple-choice test. This research was descriptive quantitative and the data were analyzed using SPSS Statistics 20. The findings showed that the student's mastery of constructing simple present tense was at an average level with a mean of 64.08. The easiest part for them to master is affirmative sentences with subjects I, You, We, and They with a mean of 66.32. Meanwhile, the most difficult part was in a negative sentence with a mean of 63.16. The analyses explained that the majority of the students made mistakes in putting ending –s/-es for the verbs with subjects She, He, and It, and also still had problems in forming negative sentences in using auxiliaries do/does. It is recommended to English lecturers have more focuses on giving information in forming a Simple Present Tense.

Abstract

Character building is a process of understanding the relationships experienced by every In learning English, there are four skills that relate to each other namely; listening, reading, writing and speaking. One of techniques in learning writing is using Dyadic Essay. The aim of the research : 1) to find out the English students’ ability before being conducted by using Dyadic Essay Technique, 2)  to find out the English students’ ability after being conducted by using Dyadic Essay Technique and 3) to find out the significant effect of using Dyadic Essay Technique. The total respondents were eighteen students of English Study Program. The findings showed : 1) the students’ writing ability before being conducted by using Dyadic Essay technique was 29.03, 2) the students’ writing ability after being conducted by using Dyadic Essay technique was 55.83, and 3) there is significant effect in using Dyadic Essay technique where ttest  is higher than ttable in significance level of 5% and 1% is 2.05 > 6.05 < 2.76. In sum, Dyadic Essay Technique was effective to improve the students’ ability in writing.
