Abstract

This Community Service program is aimed at developing the state vocational shool (Sekolah Menengah Kejuruan) teachers in Padang in teaching English based on ESP (English for Specific Purposes) approach. This workshop is conducted since many SMK graduates have lack of ability in English while they should be ready-use employment in this globalized world. 20 teachers from 10 state vocational shools in Padang attended this workshop, and each school sent 2 teachers. These teachers learnt the concept of ESP related to the students’ study program, practiced on material selection and development and ESP teaching methods, performed micro-teaching, and had discussion and peer-evaluation. It is expected that SMKs will be favourite schools which produce ready-use graduates in their future workfield.

Abstract

This research is a kind of a comparison study that deals with lexical complexity in the Indonesian scholars’ journal articles. The analysis covers 98 journal articles from the national and international publication using 25 lexical complexity indices. Results of the research showed that the journal articles of international journals have higher mean scores of lexical complexity indices than the national, but significant differences only occurred in the indices for the lexical sophistication and lexical variation, particularly the type-token ratio and verb variation. This may show the performance gap between the two publications from Indonesian academics as to share the lexical characteristic of the international publication surpass the national.Studi komparatif ini membahas lexical complexity dari artikel-artikel jurnal yang dihasilkan para penulis Indonesia. Analisis dilakukan terhadap 98 artikel jurnal terbitan nasional dan internasional dengan memakai 25 indeks lexical complexity. Hasil penelitian memperlihatkan bahwa artikel-artikel jurnal terbitan internasional memiliki rerata indeks lexical complexity lebih tinggi dibanding terbitan nasional, namun perbedaan signifikan hanya terdapat pada indeks-indeks lexical sophistication dan lexical variation, terutama pada rasio type-token dan verb variation. Hal ini bisa jadi merefleksikan adanya performance gap antara kedua kelompok publikasi yang dihasilkan para akademis Indonesia, sekaligus memperlihatkan bahwa karakteristik leksikal dari publikasi internasional lebih tinggi dibanding publikasi nasional

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to analyze the types and functions of impoliteness strategies used by netizens in the comment section on Instagram of Benny Blanco, a celebrity who posted about his girlfriend, Selena Gomez. Fifty English comments in response to Benny Blanco’s Instagram post on July 22, 2024 were collected. Qualitative descriptive method and Culpeper’s impoliteness theory were used to analyze the data. The research results indicate that the bald on record is the dominant type of impoliteness that netizen used to respond Benny Blanco’s post with 24 data (48%). It is followed by positive impoliteness with 16 data (32%), negative impoliteness with 6 data (12%), and sarcasm with 4 data (8%). Additionally, the most dominant function of impoliteness that netizens used is affective impoliteness with 29 data (58%). It is followed coercive impoliteness with 11 data (22%), and entertaining impoliteness with 10 data (20%). These results indicate that impoliteness in social media does not only indicate rudeness but also as a way to attack someone. Specifically, this research shows that netizens use impoliteness in Instagram to express disagreement with Benny and Selena’s relationship.

Abstract

This study analyzed Taylor Swift's expressive speech acts in The Ellen Show. This study aims to identify the categories of expressive speech and the adjectives manifested in the expressive speech acts to convey her emotions or feelings. The data were taken from three interview videos and analyzed using Ronan’s (2015) categories of expressive speech acts and Sinclair et al. (2017) for the types and functions of adjectives. This study employs a qualitative descriptive method. From a total of 62 data, seven categories of expressive speech were identified in Taylor Swift conversations with Ellen. They are agreement, disagreement, volition, thanking, non-directed complaints in exclamations, expressing sorrow, and greetings. The most frequently used category is agreement, with a percentage 29,04%. This reflects Taylor's humble, polite, and respectful personality. While qualitative adjectives are the most dominant type of adjectives used with a percentage of 65,71%. This shows that Taylor often conveys her personal feelings and experiences in new music promotion, her past viral moments, and personal revelations emotionally and deeply.
