Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a transformative force shaping society, and online media plays a pivotal role in shaping public perceptions of it. Given the media’s influence, understanding its framing of recent AI advancements, such as the emergence of Large Language Models (LLMs) like ChatGPT, becomes increasingly critical. These models have revolutionized human-machine interaction and are subject to media narratives that can significantly influence public understanding and policy. This research explores the framing of AI narratives in Indonesian online media through the utilization of topic modelling. The study aims to uncover the dominant narratives and themes surrounding AI, including the nuanced portrayal of LLMs and Chat GPT. Using a dataset of online articles and news pieces on AI in the Indonesian context, topic modelling analysis identifies and analyzes the key topics and sentiments. The findings reveal that Indonesian online media tends to portray AI positively, emphasizing its potential for innovation and economic growth. However, concern about ethical implications and job displacement are also present. These findings provide important insights for AI developers, journalists, and policymakers, highlighting the importance of balanced reporting to shape informed public opinion and ethical AI practices.

Abstract

Political dynasties have emerged as a significant concern in Indonesian politics, particularly in the context of the 2024 presidential election. This study aims to analyze the representation of political dynasties in editorial cartoons published by the Kompas daily newspaper during the 2024 Presidential Election period. Using a descriptive qualitative approach with Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis, this study examines four editorial cartoons published between October 19, 2023, and February 10, 2024, focusing on their denotative, connotative, and mythical meanings. The results show that the cartoons represent power and dominance through the manipulation of visual size, contain criticism of the political system through various symbols such as tornadoes and the Constitutional Court building wrapped in an octopus, and depict society through various crowd expressions that reflect Indonesian pluralism. The research findings identify three main myths: the myth of power and political elites that reflects the Javanese cultural concept of centralized authority; myths related to money politics that represent the influence of economic power; and the myth of democracy without people that highlights low party identification among voters. This study demonstrates how editorial cartoons use symbolism, exaggeration, distortion, stereotypes, caricatures, and humor to deliver sharp political criticism. This research contributes to understanding how editorial cartoons function as an effective medium for social criticism by visually representing important issues in the Indonesian democratic process, inviting readers to reflect on the challenges of democracy while encouraging improvements toward a more substantive political system.

Abstract

Digital disruption has fundamentally eroded traditional media business models, forcing legacy outlets to seek alternative revenue streams. This study analyzes the institutionalization of sponsored news, internally termed “collaborative content”, at Harian Kompas as a survival strategy. Adopting a constructivist qualitative case study approach, the research integrates semi-structured interviews with six key informants, newsroom observation, and internal document analysis to examine how the organization navigates the tension between commercial necessity and journalistic integrity. The findings reveal that Harian Kompas has formally institutionalized sponsored news by establishing a dedicated Collaborative Content Desk. This entity employs a “non-approval” mechanism to ensure editorial independence from partners, while editorial leadership utilizes “roso” (editorial intuition) as a critical ethical filter for partner and theme selection. Despite these safeguards, the study identifies persistent challenges, notably collaborators’ resistance toward transparent content labeling and the emergence of subconscious bias among field journalists. The study demonstrates that Harian Kompas, as a hybrid media organization, actively negotiates the balance between market survival and the preservation of core journalistic values in the digital era. This finding highlights how legacy institutions institutionalize sponsored content while striving to maintain editorial integrity, thereby contributing to broader discussions on the transformation of media organizations under digital disruption.
