Abstract

In the Soeharto era, the Indonesian journalists were divided into two categories: the cooperative and the non-cooperative ones. Different from the former that obeyed to the government to do self-censorship, the latter category challenged against the government by publishing not only good news, but also any sensitive news about the national problems. In this research, I will analyze the struggle of the non-cooperative journalists, later called the independent journalists, against the regulation of censorship. How they responded to the censorship, and what ways they used to resist the regulation will be the main focuses of the study. In conducting this research, I use history method including heuristic, criticism, interpretation, and historiography. The result of the study shows that the independent journalists took actions by founding an organization called the AJI (the Alliance of Independent Journalists) to organize the journalists with the same goal: ceasing freedom of expression. They also had several alternative media to disseminate the information to avoid the government surveillance, like publishing books, using the internet, conducting seminars, and founding discussion forums with Indonesian students. Their efforts, triggered by the economic collapse factor, succeeded to end the authoritarianism regime.

Abstract

During Ramadhan month in the 2000s, most Indonesian TV stations used to air Islamic-themed soap operas. However, the stories of those soap operas did not represent Islamic values. Rather than showing Islamic messages in their stories, most scenes of those soap operas were all about melodrama and mysticism. This research aims to analyze and compare two Islamic-labeled soap operas, Lorong Waktu 3 (2002) and Kiamat Sudah Dekat (2005), claimed as the real Islamic stories by Dedi Mizwar. While I intend to prove Mizwar's claim, I also will focus on examining the romantic scenes in both soap operas. I use qualitative methods to analyze the research objective by collecting primary sources digitally on YouTube and secondary sources in online-offline libraries. The videos of Mizwars' soap operas are available and open-accessed on YouTube, so obtaining the relevant primary sources is effortless. After researching, I found that melodrama and mysticism popularities of many Islamic labeled soap operas did not influence the romantic love stories of Mizwar's production. Both Lorong Waktu 3 and Kiamat Sudah Dekat beautifully convey how Islam confines a romantic relationship to Indonesian Muslim society. All in all, this research shows the filmmaker succeeded in criticizing and changing the image of most soap opera characters that previously did not represent Islamic lessons.

Abstract

Abstract This study examines the significant changes in the use of the hijab as a symbol of women's identity from the New Order era to the Reform era in Indonesia. The main objective of this research is to analyze how society's perception of the hijab has evolved over time and how this reflects the evolution of women's identity in the social and political context of Indonesia. The research methodology employed includes content analysis of relevant literature, historical data, and interviews with women actively wearing the hijab. The research findings indicate that the shift in the perception of the hijab from a symbol of religious obedience to a symbol of freedom of expression reflects a shift in values and norms in Indonesian society, allowing women to express their identities more freely through a diverse and personal choice of hijab styles. These changes mark a profound transformation in how Indonesian women view and interpret the hijab as an integral part of their identity and self-expression.

Abstract

Dede Oetomo, born in 1953, is Indonesia’s first LGBT (currently popular with LGBTQ+) activist. He uses the LGBT organisation GAYa NUSANTARA as a vehicle for LGBT to obtain safe sex education, to gain their emancipation in same-sex marriage, and to struggle anti-social and political discrimination. In this research essay, I will explain Oetomo’s struggle from his childhood to adulthood when he struggled for the LGBT emancipation in Indonesia, a Muslim-majority country. I use qualitative method to conduct the research begun with collecting primary sources like old magazines and photos from the GAYa Nusantara website. The result of the research shows that although Oetomo has had some minor success with his LGBT organisation to gain legal same-sex marriage and abolishing discrimination against LGBT, Oetomo keeps struggling to bring LGBT emancipation acknowledged in the Indonesian law.
