Abstract

The purpose of the paper is to present how the interference of an individual's mother tongue hinders in acquiring a second language, which leads to Interlingual errors. It is an observation that the speakers also commit those errors which have no influence of the mother tongue but are a result of the target language which are called Intralingual errors. This paper particularly focuses on how the Maithili language (LI) acts as a hindrance for the Maithili ESL learners to acquire the target language, that is, the English language (L2). The survey also displays the traces of Intralingual errors in the responses of the speakers, who are committing grammatical errors in speaking the English language (L2). The analysis and evaluation of the results that have been procured through the digital questionnaire survey conducted has been displayed in this paper. The general survey shows that people admitted making grammatical errors while speaking both native and second language and it can be inferred from the specific survey that the same respondents have committed errors in more than half of the questions given to them. The objective of the paper is not only to show the various reasons which lead the Maithili ESL speakers to commit errors while speaking or writing the English language but also to profuse remedies to overcome these barriers. It can be concluded from the entire research that the hypothesis is justified and there is a scope for remedial measures to correct the situation.

Abstract

This study, titled “Metaphorical Landscapes: Exploring Metaphors in Hindi, Bhojpuri, and English Proverbs,” investigates the intricate and culturally rich use of metaphors in the proverbs of these three languages. Proverbs, known for their brevity and depth, serve as vessels of communal wisdom, encapsulating cultural values, societal norms, and collective experiences. Metaphors within these proverbs enhance their expressive power by enabling the conveyance of abstract ideas through vivid, concrete imagery. This research seeks to uncover the underlying conceptual frameworks that shape the worldviews of Hindi, Bhojpuri, and English-speaking communities. Focusing primarily on Hindi and Bhojpuri due to their geographical and cultural proximity, this study also includes English to explore potential overlaps and borrowings in metaphorical expressions. Employing a qualitative comparative methodology, this study analyses a curated selection of proverbs to identify universal themes and distinct metaphorical constructs. Proverbs, as carriers of cultural wisdom, offer a window into the collective psyche and values of a community. Through this exploration, the present study aims to understand these metaphorical landscapes to foster empathy, cross-cultural dialogue, and a deeper appreciation of the intricate ways in which language shapes our perception of the world.

Abstract

This paper aims to investigate the transforming potential of AI-driven translating tools in safeguarding and advancing India’s great linguistic variety. By allowing their translation into generally spoken tongues, technologies including Bhashini, Anuvadini, Google Translate, and DeepL are becoming increasingly effective tools for bridging linguistic barriers and reducing the loss of threatened languages. By doing this, these instruments become quite important in preserving cultural identities and guaranteeing the survival of linguistic legacy. This study emphasizes how AI translation tools not only improve efficient communication among many language communities but also greatly help to digital archiving of languages for next generations, so increasing their accessibility and understandable value to more general audiences. This paper shows that AI-driven translating tools not only serve as means of linguistic preservation but also as essential resources for ensuring the continuous relevance and survival of India’s several languages in the digital era by combining a mixed-methods approach—integrating both quantitative survey data collected via WhatsApp and Instagram and qualitative insights drawn from academic articles, web sources. These results have broad ramifications since they highlight the pressing need of legislators, technologists, and cultural players to fund the creation of inclusive, accurate, and sensitive AI language tools. Moreover, the research implies that ensuring that minority and threatened languages are meaningfully reflected in the digital sphere will depend on cooperative efforts among local communities, linguists, and technology developers. This study creates opportunities for future innovation aiming at promoting linguistic equity and cultural sustainability in India and beyond by advancing the debate on the ethical and cultural obligations of artificial intelligence development.

Abstract

This study delves into the intriguing world of language dynamics within the popular messaging platform, WhatsApp, focusing on how young people communicate. Through the course of its research, this study aims to uncover a fascinating phenomenon called ‘Language Attrition’ - a subtle transformation in the way languages are used in this digital space. On WhatsApp, users seamlessly blend their native languages with a more global one. This results in a unique linguistic landscape where expressions from different languages coexist, sometimes making it challenging to distinguish between them. With India being a multilingual nation, the study explores the potential loss or degradation of languages due to the leniency and carelessness of social media language. The paper employs a mixed-method approach, combining qualitative analysis of WhatsApp conversations with a digital questionnaire survey. The research investigates factors such as the prevalence of emoticons, code-switching, and multilingualism, shedding light on the multifaceted dimensions of language attrition.
