Abstract

The objective of this research was to find out the students’ dominant difficulties in translating an editorial text of The Jakarta Post. The subjects of this research were 30 seventh semester students of Education Study Program at Universitas Bengkulu in the academic year 2020/2021. This research used a quantitative descriptive method. The data were collected with a questionnaire and were counted in percentage terms. The results of this research showed that there were 5 students’ dominants difficulties in translating the editorial, i.e. a.)The difficulties in understanding unfamiliar words(60%), b.) The difficulties in understanding the texts although they understand the meaning of the words but they could not understand it coherently. Sometimes one sentence looked like disconnected with another sentence so it became odd (57%),c.)The difficulties in understanding the difficult sentences (47%), d.)The difficulties in translating the words that had multiple meanings which made it difficult for them to determine which meaning was correct and in understanding the ambiguous words (43%), and e.)The difficulties in translating phrases (43%). In conclusion, among all the dominant difficulties in translating the editorial the most dominant one was the difficulties in understanding unfamiliar words (60%). It was suggested that the undergraduate students should study lexicology and syntax intensively.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to explore the effect of authentic texts on students' reading comprehension of the English Education Study Program at the University of Bengkulu. This research applied a quantitative method, in the form of a quasi-experimental study. The subjects of the research were 68 sixth-semester students in which 34 students as the experimental group and 34 other students as the controlled group. The experimental group got treatment of authentic text, while the controlled group got treatment of textbooks. The instrument of the research used was the test. The mean score of the experimental group was higher than the scores of the controlled group (75.88: 68.24). The t-test calculation = (p<α); (0.005<0.05). It means alternative hypothesis was accepted, and null hypothesis was rejected. In other words, there was an effect of using authentic texts on students’ reading comprehension. It was recommended that it was a good idea for English lecturers, apart from other texts, pay close attention to authentic texts as well.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis bagaimana strategi yang harus diterapkan Badan Usaha Pelabuhan Sri Tanjung Gelam dalam meningkatkan layanan Transportasi Laut. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah Mix method Kualitatif dan Kuantitatif dengan menggunakan analisis SWOT. Teknik pengumpulan data melalui wawancara mendalam dan kuesioner dengan jumlah responden sebanyak 30 orang yang terdiri dari pengelola dan pengawas pelabuhan serta penumpang. Setelah melalui analisis data menggunakan analisis SWOT, didapatkan hasil perhitungan analisis grafik faktor X (Internal) dan Y (Eksternal) yaitu: X -0,166 dan Y 0,176. Hasil tersebut berada di Kuadran III yang artinya perusahaan menghadapi peluang yang sangat besar, namun di sisi lain perusahaan menghadapi berbagai kendala/kelemahan. Fokus strategi ini ialah meminimalkan masalah-masalah internal perusahaan seperti seperti, dermaga yang kurang nyaman dan aman, ruang tunggu yang kecil dan kurang nyaman serta waktu keberangkatan kapal yang sering terlambat untuk mendapatkan peluang yang lebih besar untuk memberikan kenyaman kepada pengguna layanan trasnportasi laut di pelabuhan tersebut dan menarik lebih banyak penumpang untuk menggunakan layanan transportasi laut di pelabuhan tersebut. Strategi yang harus diterapkan ialah diantaranya: Meningkatkan promosi dan pemasaran pelabuhan sebagai pusat transportasi antarpulau yang lengkap dan terpercaya untuk menarik lebih banyak penumpang dan aktifitas ekonomi, Mengoptimalkan pemanfaatan fasilitas yang ada untuk pengembangan layanan baru, seperti layanan logistik dan pariwisata antar pulau, guna mendukung pertumbuhan ekponomi lokal, Mengembangkan rute pelayaran baru dengan mempertimbangkan kebutuhan pasar dan potensi daerah guna memperluas jangkauan pelabuhan, Melakukan perbaikan dan renovasi dermaga untuk meningkatkan kenyamanan dan keamanan pengguna, disertai modernisasi fasilitas ruang tunggu sehingga menjadi lebih representatif
