Abstract

Indonesia is a disaster-prone country, particularly to earthquakes, which often occur suddenly and cause significant damage. This study aims to understand the behavior of residents in residential buildings during the major earthquake in Banda Aceh in 2004. The research adopts an exploratory qualitative approach, with data collected through open-ended online questionnaires. The analysis reveals various behavioral patterns during the disaster, including staying outside the building, helping others, staying inside the building, evacuating, protecting oneself, following others, heading to a building, praying, and not taking any action. Demographic factors such as age and gender influenced individual responses, especially the tendency for children to follow adults in decision-making. The findings highlight that earthquake response behaviors vary greatly, influenced by environmental, demographic, and emergency factors, and underscore the importance of building design that supports quick and safe evacuation.

Abstract

Indonesia is prone to natural disasters that can occur unexpectedly and gradually. Natural disasters implement surprising impacts due to a lack of awareness and preparedness in facing the threats. One of the reasons caused by such a disaster that can be seen is through human behaviour. Human behaviour is challenging to predict in an emergency, stressful and chaotic. Spontaneous behaviour is distinguished by location factors, indoor or outdoor, with indoor, divided by Home and Public Building. This research aims to reveal spontaneous human behaviour during natural disasters while inside and outside the building. This research was conducted with a qualitative exploratory method. Data were collected using an online questionnaire with open-ended questions and distributed freely. The findings show tendencies to withstand when in the public building while going to distance themselves from building while at home, as for those outdoor opt to surrender as not to do anything

Abstract

Energy conservation remains a challenging practice to implement in office. Several factors hinder energy-saving behaviors in the office, including physical factors such as the numerous electronic devices that heavily rely on electricity, the need for lighting to illuminate workspaces, thermal comfort dependent on air conditioning, and security as well as safety measures often supported by the use of 24-hour surveillance cameras. Additionally, habitual or ingrained behaviors also pose barriers to energy conservation efforts. This study aims to explore employees' perceptions of the importance of energy conservation in the office.

Abstract

This study explores how the design elements of Studio B at the Department of Architecture and Planning, Syiah Kuala University, influence students' learning behavior. Usinga descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through observation and questionnaires. Observational findings revealed that physical elements such as lighting, ventilation, and furniture arrangement play a significant role in creating a comfortable learning environment. Questionnaire results indicated that most respondents felt moderately to highly comfortable with aspects such as lighting, air circulation, and ventilation, which positively impacted their productivity.
