Abstract

Uremic stomatitis is one of the oral manifestations of chronic kidney disease. This disease is caused due to increased levels of urea in the blood circulation. Patients will complain sore lesions accompanied by a characteristic ammonia breath odor. The clinical manifestation of uremic stomatitis is not only influenced by high levels of urea in the blood but also related to local factors, the oral anatomy and parafunction habits. This study aimed to  present  a case report of clinical features of uremic stomatitis that mimicking oral squamous cell carcinoma. A 51 year old woman was referred from the department of internal medicine to the department of oral medicine at Hasan Sadikin Hospital, Bandung. The patient complained of pain in the tongue and also when swallowing. The clinical manifestation shows an ulcerated lesion on the right lateral of the tongue and a slightly raised hyperkeratotic area on the floor of the mouth. The treatment is using 0.12% chlorhexidine digluconate mouthwash three times a day and followed by applying a thin layer of vaseline on the upper and lower lips, as well as instructions and education on maintaining oral and tongue hygiene. Controls were carried out on the second and fourteenth day. The patient complaints are decreasing until disappear. The patient's masticatory function is getting better. Local and systemic factors have effect on the clinical manifestation of uremic stomatitis. A clinician must be able to carry out examinations, establish diagnosis and appropriate management so that patients receive appropriate treatment.

Abstract

Oral health impact profile-14 (OHIP-14) is a method used to measure oral health quality of life (OHRQoL) after radiotherapy. This case report aims to evaluate OHIP-14 before and after head and neck cancer treatment. In case-1, a 51-year-old man complained of an unpleasant sensa-tion in the mouth, loss of taste, and dry lips after undergoing the 17th cycle of radiotherapy. Case-2, a 24-year-old man complained of dry mouth and unpleasant sensation inside the mouth especially when eating and drinking after undergoing 3rd cycle radiotherapy. Both were diagnosed with stage III tongue cancer. The patients were referred to the Department of Oral Medicine. The patients were diagnosed with oral mucositis, acute pseudomembranous candidiasis, exfoliative cheilitis and xerostomia. Patients were treated with mechanical cleaning using gauze soaked in 0.9% NaCl, gargling with 0.025% hyaluronic acid three times daily for oral mucositis, nystatin oral suspension for oral candidiasis, vaseline album and GC dry Mouth® topical commercial gel for dry lips and xerostomia. The OHIP-14 scores of both patients decreased. It was concluded that a decrease in OHIP-14 score indicates successful treatment of head and neck cancer patients with oral complications after radiotherapy.

Abstract

This systematic review discusses various cell culture techniques, growth media, growth factors and environmental factors that are often used on oral mucosal cells to obtain the most effective oral mucosal cell culture method. Based on the PRISMA state-ment, the search was conducted using three electronic databases, namely PubMed, Scopus, Ebsco Host for articles published in 2012-2022 using specific keywords. The search was limited to invitro research using cell culture, in English, full text, and human oral mucosal cells. Article quality assessment was conducted using the Risk of Bias Assessment Tool for Non-randomised Stu-dies (RoBANS). Eleven articles had good eligibility and met the inclusion criteria for analysis. It was concluded that keratino-cytes and fibroblasts for normal tissues, and OSCC for pathogenic tissues were most commonly used for oral mucosal cell cul-ture, while the widely used culture media were F medium and keratinocyte medium.
