Abstract

The speedy advancement in internet technology has revolutionized the use of social media platforms as ways of communication globally. This paper examines the proliferations social media sites in the world and its use among the Muslims.  Unlike traditional media, most of internet based means of social interactions are user-generated. It allows the individual to determine the content of the message with or without censorship or regulation. The liberty to open an account with any site of choice and the freedom it entails, lured some Muslims to surf social media without recourse to or in line with the basic tenets of Islamic teachings.  The paper is a qualitative method where In-Depth Interviews were conducted with seasoned social users.  The researchers purposively selected three participants for the study and interview because they are Muslims and possessed the knowledge about the phenomenon investigated. Some of the findings of the study revealed that some Muslims finds it convenient to share or post unsubstantiated religious messages on social media. Similarly, it has paved way for increasing number of untrained social media preachers. This makes it a delicate tool at the disposal of some of Muslim to fan antagonism among Muslim of creeds and sects in Nigeria. The article concludes that social media is a double-edged sword which side-effects as apparent when Muslim user do not resort to the teachings of Islam as the guiding principle when surfing the social media sites. The unfettered user-generated content of social media in 21st century enables the users to operate outside the ambit of the Islamic convention of social interactions.

Abstract

The foundation of an egalitarian society is rooted in the family system, and a healthy marital atmosphere is needed to achieve the objective of marriage. Pre-marital medical test plays a vital role that cannot be overemphasized, particularly in limiting the spread of some infectious diseases, such as sickle cell, HIV, thalassemia, etc. However, the fact that some resistance was relatively recorded on the pre-marital medical tests among people in the Sokoto metropolis does not mean it has no place in Islam. The study intends to assess the level and attitudes of Muslims of Sokoto State towards the pre-marital test. The paper specifically examines the extent to which the pre-marital medical test is observed in the metropolis and the societal perception of it from the Islamic perspective, bearing in mind that preserving human life is among the significant goals of Shari'ah in Islam. Hence, the paper discovers less patronage of pre-marital medical tests by people in the Sokoto metropolis, which many attributed to ignorance of their existence and poor perception of them. The paper underpins the importance of having these tests by would-be couples before marriage as well as the position of Islam on them so that people in the state can embrace them accordingly. The paper adopted a qualitative survey where interviews were conducted with individuals and the researchers purposively selected participants. In conclusion, the study highlighted some of the importance of pre-marital medical tests among the Muslim Ummah.

Reconciling such data has become a daunting task for the researchers however when the researcher resorted to verification of the data collected from the experts and available old people in the community concerned, both data could be harmonized and produced robust findings in the reconstruction of Islamic history in Yauri Emirate.

Abstract

Purpose: This study examines the growing insistence by some Muslim religious scholars in Kogi State on requiring pre-marital pregnancy tests for prospective brides before solemnizing Islamic marriage contracts. It aims to evaluate the religious legitimacy, ethical implications, and social consequences of this practice within the broader framework of Islamic teachings on marriage, dignity, and the protection of lineage (ḥifẓ al-nasl). Design/methods/approach: The research employs a qualitative and analytical methodology. Primary sources include the Qur’an, Hadith literature, and classical works of Islamic jurisprudence. Secondary sources consist of scholarly books, peer-reviewed journal articles, and contemporary reports concerning Muslim social practices in Nigeria. Data were analyzed through normative Islamic legal reasoning and contextual socio-religious interpretation. Findings: The study finds that supporters of pre-marital pregnancy testing argue that the practice helps prevent disputes over paternity, safeguards family honour, and discourages immoral conduct. Conversely, critics maintain that compulsory testing may violate personal dignity, foster suspicion between families, and lacks an explicit textual basis in Islamic law. The findings further indicate that while Islam strongly emphasizes moral conduct and lineage preservation, coercive implementation of such tests may conflict with Islamic values of justice, privacy, and human dignity. Research implications/limitations: This study is limited to a conceptual and textual analysis centered on the socio-religious context of Kogi State and does not include extensive field interviews or quantitative community data. Future studies may incorporate empirical perspectives from scholars, families, and marriage registrants across different Muslim communities. The research contributes to contemporary discussions on balancing Islamic legal objectives with evolving social realities. Originality/value: This paper offers an original contribution by critically exploring the emerging practice of pre-marital pregnancy testing in a Muslim African context through the lens of Islamic jurisprudence and ethics. It provides a nuanced framework for understanding how religious authority, communal morality, and individual rights interact in contemporary Muslim marriage practices
