Abstract

This study examines the main character, Forrest Gump, from Winston Groom’s 1986 novel. Despite being labeled an "idiot" and facing ridicule, Forrest achieves remarkable success. The research focuses on two key questions: how repression and sublimation are expressed in the novel. Using Sigmund Freud’s theories on defense mechanisms, the study explores Forrest’s psychological struggles and achievements. Freud’s concepts of consciousness (conscious, preconscious, and unconscious) and the structural model (id, ego, and superego) provide the framework for analyzing Forrest’s repression and sublimation. The research employs qualitative methods, including close reading of the novel, to collect and analyze data. Findings reveal that Forrest’s self-defense mechanisms manifest through his ability to overcome societal judgment and achieve greatness, highlighting the complexity of his character despite his perceived limitations. This study underscores the interplay between psychological defense mechanisms and personal success, offering a deeper understanding of Forrest Gump’s resilience and accomplishments.

Abstract

Lars von Trier's Breaking the Waves (1996) succeeded in initiating polarizing arguments concentrated on the tragic fate of its central heroin, Bess. The violent misogynistic treatments she receives from the society in her village—governed by a deeply patriarchal institution—could not be discounted. However, the experimentation of sexual roles in a heterosexual relationship in patriarchy conducted in the film is another interesting source of analysis. The film proposes a reversed concept of sexual subject/object and orchestrates a certain situation where such anomaly morphs into an extremely instrumental aspect to the main characters' (Bess' and Jan's) beings and fates. In this study, the dynamics of Jan's idea about object and power, his act of assuming the concept of sexual object as his identity, his loss of physical ability and the power, and his attempt at recalling the lost essence through an eccentric request is analyzed by employing Foucault's concepts of power/knowledge and arts of existence. The utilized methods of analysis are close reading and textual analysis in which the material object’s elements or components as well as their relationships are closely examined based on certain theoretical framework. This study found that Jan is demonstrating the decentralized nature of power, in this case sexual power, in the face of essentializing patriarchal ideas about sexual subject/object and male/female sexual identities through his identification as a sexual object despite of being a male in a patriarchal society.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze and compare language politeness in the spoken traditions of Minangkabau and Balinese communities through an intercultural pragmatics approach. One way of communication that represents the social norms and cultural principles of a society is spoken tradition. In this situation, language politeness reflects the communication strategies used by speakers to maintain social balance and respect the interlocutor. This research is a descriptive qualitative study with a pragmatic approach to identify the forms, and strategies of language politeness in the spoken traditions of both cultures. The data uses observational method and support note-taking and recording as techniques. The data will be analyzed by using Brown and Levinson's (1987) politeness theory on politeness strategies as well as relevant local perspectives in each culture by using ethnography communication. In analyzing the data, the author uses the pragmatic method, while to present the research results, formal and informal methods are used in which the results of all data analysis are presented thoroughly. What is expected from the results of the study is to increase the understanding of different language politeness strategies in spoken language between two cultures and how the dynamics of intercultural communication occur in Indonesia. In addition, the findings can be used as a reference for sosiopragmatics studies, and the preservation of oral traditions in the context of change. The results of the study show that declarative utterances in both cultures not only serve to convey information, but also act as advice, exhortation, and reinforcement of social values in a positive manner. Through the use of metaphors, collective statements, and traditional expressions with layered moral meanings, positive and negative politeness strategies dominate the new types of politeness. Theoretically, this study reinforces the idea that the function of utterances can change according to the socio-cultural context and that the concept of politeness can be expanded in pragmatic research by considering the culture of the archipelago. The results of this study confirm that oral traditions are an important tool for maintaining social balance and preserving local wisdom. In addition, oral traditions have an impact on character education, cultural preservation, and language development in society. Keywords: Language politeness, spoken tradition, Minangkabau, Bali, intercultural pragmatics.
