Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kemampuan berbahasa Inggris pada materi prayer (sholat) dengan menggunakan memory strategy. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian tindakan kelas yang bertujuan untuk mengangkat masalah-masalah aktual yang dihadapi oleh guru/dosen untuk memperbaiki serta meningkatkan praktik pembelajaran di kelas, khususnya pada mata kuliah bahasa Inggris mahasiswa Prodi Pendidikan Bahasa Arab STAIN Madina. Penelitian ini dilakukan dalam dua siklus dengan enam tahapan, yaitu: (1) penetapan fokus permasalahan, (2) perencanaan tindakan, (3) pelaksanaan tindakan, (4) pengumpulan data (pengamatan/observasi), (5) refleksi (analisis, dan interpretasi), (6) perencanaan tindak lanjut. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terdapat peningkatan yang terjadi terhadap mahasiswa saat menjelaskan prayer (sholat) menggunakan bahasa Inggris. Dari nilai rata-rata mahasiswa yang hanya 44.18 pada pre-test menjadi 56.59 pada post-test yang dilakukan di siklus 1 dengan persentase capaian kelulusan sebesar 17.65%. Sedangkan pada post-test di siklus 2 terdapat peningkatan nilai rata-rata menjadi 74.39 dengan persentase capaian kelulusan mencapai 88.24%. Hasil tersebut sudah melampaui nilai KKM (Kriteria Ketuntasan Minimal) yang ditentukan oleh peneliti sebesar 65. Walaupun dari hasil penelitian tidak satupun mahasiswa yang mendapat nilai 85, setidaknya dengan latar belakang mereka sebagai mahasiswa non bahasa Inggris nilai tersebut sudah mengindikasikan keberhasilan mahasiswa dalam belajar bahasa Inggris.

Abstract

Limited public speaking Mastery among students highlight the need for structured guidance and continuous practice. To address this issue, MTs. NU Malintang Jae implemented a speech extracurricular activity as a platform to enhance students’ speaking Mastery. This study aimed to analyze students' speaking skills and identify the challenges they faced during the activity. A qualitative field study method was used, involving 25 eighth-grade students. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation. The analysis involved data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings showed that 52% of students had a "very good" level of speaking Mastery, 28% were at a "good" level, and 20% were at a "fair" level. Challenges were observed in fluency, pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, and audience engagement. Specific difficulties were related to psychological factors (8 students), linguistic factors (12 students), environmental factors (1 student), and public speaking skill factors (4 students). These were mainly associated with lack of confidence and speaking-related anxiety. It is recommended that speech extracurricular activities provide more targeted support and practice opportunities to help students overcome these challenges and improve their speaking performance.

Abstract

This research aims to identify the problems faced by students during the process of learning English speaking skills at SMA Negeri 1 Panyabungan Selatan and to find out why the problems students face become factors that hinder their English speaking ability at SMA Negeri 1 Panyabungan Selatan, specifically focusing on 12th-grade students in MIA II. The study employs a qualitative descriptive method, emphasizing the interpretation of events and the acquisition of real data to depict the actual conditions experienced by students. Primary data were collected through questionnaires and observations, focusing on the challenges students encounter in mastering English speaking skills, including low vocabulary mastery, grammatical barriers, pronunciation issues, shyness, nervousness, fear of making mistakes, lack of confidence, limited practice, the dominance of the mother tongue, and low motivation. This research was conducted over four sessions at SMA Negeri 1 Panyabungan Selatan, focusing on the MIA II class, involving 20 students, from August 30, 2024, to September 30, 2024. The findings reveal that the English-speaking skills of the 12th-grade MIA II students remain at a low level. While some students demonstrated better speaking skills, the majority struggled to express themselves in English. In-depth classroom and outside observations showed that most students were unable to convey their thoughts effectively in English. Several factors hinder students' ability to speak English effectively. A primary issue is low vocabulary mastery, which makes it difficult for students to form simple sentences and leads to struggles in finding the right words and uncertainty about pronunciation. Many students also lack a solid understanding of English grammar, resulting in frequent errors that disrupt communication and diminish their confidence. Difficulties with pronunciation further discourage participation in speaking activities due to fear of mistakes or ridicule. Additionally, limited practice, as students focus more on written tasks and rely heavily on their mother tongue in the classroom, reduces their opportunities to practice English. Lastly, low motivation affects their progress, as many students show little interest in improving their speaking skills or understanding the relevance of English proficiency. Collectively, these factors significantly limit their overall progress in speaking English fluently.
