Abstract

The research reflected on the response to the pandemic that emerged as it happened. It drew attention to the viral aspect of a pandemic, namely how people understood and responded to pandemics using various digital platforms. It questioned the context and reasons for what it called an immeasurable but organized community response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Digital-based research was applied through observing three mainstream digital media (Kompas TV, The Jakarta Post, and Detik.com) and social media (i.e., WhatsApp Messenger and Twitter). Data were analyzed thematically by categorizing the ways people responded to COVID-19 via social media into three thematic phases. In the first phase, digital media was used to voice frustration and disappointment with the government’s response. This had sparked public distrust of the government’s ability to deal with the pandemic at the national level. The second phase was the confusion phase. The rise of public discussion about the pandemic showed that the public was concerned about the development of the COVID-19 news in the country. The last phase was the negotiation phase. While COVID-19 was rapidly becoming a source of panic and confusion, grassroots initiatives emerged using social media. These initiatives aimed to help reduce panic and reduce socio-economic impacts. The research shows how anthropologists can still pay attention to social relations forged through social media in times of crisis where traditional anthropological fieldwork is nearly impossible. Methodologically, digital anthropology or social media ethnography is gaining momentum to be developed, considering that fieldwork cannot be done in the pandemic era.

Abstract

This special issue on the Crisis of Care is the result of extensive collaborative research, discussions, and interactions among contributors. In 2022, with colleagues from the University of Southampton, Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia in Jakarta, and Universitas Gadjah Mada in Yogyakarta, we co-organised a conference entitled ‘Care Dynamics in Contemporary Indonesia’. Ciptaningrat Larastiti was part of a two-year research collaboration between the University of Southampton (United Kingdom) and Atma Jaya Catholic University (Jakarta), titled ‘Care Network in Later Life’. Her research focuses on care for landless older people with a state of dependency in rural Yogyakarta. Elan Lazuardi, having completed her PhD on HIV care, co-organised the conference as the representative of the Department of Anthropology, Universitas Gadjah Mada.

Abstract

Nowadays, digital literacy is often considered as a compulsory competence for young people. The advancement in information technology has impacted societal lives in positive ways. However, this technology falls under suspicion for exerting negative influences in child development. In order to navigate the internet safely, young people need a particular skill. This community service program focused on assisting students to develop their digital literacy skills. The program took place between June-October 2021 in Muallimat Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta, that provides secondary education for female students. The program was conducted in three (3) stages, i.e.: focus group discussion with students and teachers, webinar for students, and a collaborative project which resulted in three (3) different posters addressing internet-related problems. Before COVID-19, this school is considered relatively unique because students live in dormitory. In addition, the school also imposes ban of personal mobile phone. Since the pandemic hit, students returned to their home and school activities were conducted online. Such changes pose a number of challenges for students, particularly in terms of tim management, cyberbullying, and online privacy. Through this program, students were able to work together to reflect on their internet use and develop a safer way to navigate the internet.
