Abstract

During the Indonesian reformation era, Madurese politics began to see a notable increase in women participation. One indicator is the increasing number of female village chiefs, locally referred to as Klebun, who occupies the highest leadership position within Madurese villages. An in-depth interview with two female Klebuns and three informants revealed that female Klebun in Madura represents women and extended kinship interests in continuing dynastic politics. The female Klebun experienced a subaltern form of relationship with the largely patriarchal system they find themselves in, marked by coercion, threats, pressure and lack of freedom in their candidacy and village leadership. The lack of any communicated objections from the female population over these repressive actions is due to the strong dominance of patriarchal culture in Madurese society. This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach. The primary data used are the results of interviews with five informants. Secondary data used consist of relevant scientific journals, articles, and books. This research is conducted under the framework of postcolonial feminism.

Abstract

The position of village head (klebun) in Madura is predominantly held by men, suggesting patriarchal power and political dynasties. This study explores how women klebuns responded to the situation by empowering themselves and other women. The analysis uses qualitative descriptive methods and Foucault’s theory of power and legitimacy. Data was collected from observations of 11 women klebuns and in-depth interviews with four of them. The findings reveal that female klebuns face a choice between being extensions of their male relatives or being leaders themselves. To challenge the patriarchal constructs, they strategically use political influence, establish relationships with officials, and seek support from legal aid institutions. These efforts were made to address the issue of village security centering around the Madurese people in order to regain public trust. The study unveils the complexity of women’s empowerment in Madura’s male-dominated political landscape. This encouraged female klebuns to strive and transform the social and political dynamics, advocating for gender equality and challenging existing power structures. This research offers insights into promoting women’s political empowerment at the village level, and fostering gender equity in local governance, inspiring change in Madura and beyond.

Abstract

This study examines how religious ideology is socially constructed in shaping a social defense system grounded in national defense within the Madurese community. In this context, strong religious values function not only as spiritual guidance but also as the basis for social norms, collective identity, and communal awareness in responding to both military and non-military threats. Using a qualitative approach, this research was conducted in Pamekasan Subdistrict, Madura, East Java, through observation, in-depth interviews, literature review, and Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) involving relevant stakeholders. Data were collected through non-participant observation, genealogical studies, and literature analysis, and were analyzed using qualitative descriptive methods. The study applies the Social Construction of Reality framework, focusing on the processes of externalization, objectification, and internalization. The findings reveal that religious values are continuously produced and reproduced through the roles of kiai, pesantren, and local traditions such as slametan and haul, which have undergone strong institutionalization and become collectively accepted social realities. These values are internalized by individuals, forming a religious habitus that fosters a sense of national defense as a moral and religious obligation. The study concludes that the integration of religious values and national defense generates a cultural and ideological form of social defense that strengthens national resilience from within society. In this context, national defense is understood not only as a physical effort but also as a social practice rooted in spirituality, social solidarity, and collective responsibility. This research contributes to the sociology of defense and offers practical insights for developing national defense awareness programs based on local wisdom and religious values. The role of non-state actors as strategic elements in building social and cultural-based national resilience is the focus of this research
