Abstract

This study investigates the impact of a holographic mobile application on improving English pronunciation among Spanish-speaking children. Utilizing a quasi-experimental design, 60 students aged 8–10 were divided into experimental and control groups. The experimental group engaged with a holographic application that projected three-dimensional visualizations of mouth movements, while the control group received traditional pronunciation instruction. After an 8-week intervention, results showed that the experimental group achieved significantly higher gains in pronunciation accuracy, particularly with difficult English phonemes such as /θ/, /ð/, and /v/. Qualitative feedback revealed enhanced learner motivation, increased engagement, and reduced pronunciation anxiety among those using the holographic tool. These findings suggest that holographic mobile applications offer an effective, immersive alternative to conventional methods, especially in supporting young learners facing phonological challenges. The study highlights the potential for integrating emerging technologies into second language acquisition programs and recommends further research on long-term impacts and scalability across diverse learning contexts.

Abstract

This research entitled “An Analysis of Illocutionary Acts in The Fault in Our Stars” proposed by John R. Searle. However, this thesis limits the study of illocutionary acts only to directive and commissive type. Directive is illocutionary act which by uttering this type, a speaker gets the hearer to do certain action, for example ordering, asking, requesting, etc. While commissive is illocutionary act which by uttering this type, a speaker commits himself to do certain action, for example promising, threatening, guaranteeing, etc. This research used quotations of The Fault in Our Stars movie taken from a website as data to be analyzed. The research used descriptive qualitative research as method to do the research. The Fault in Our Stars movie character uses directive type to request, to implore, to advise, to order, to demand, to command, or to challenge the hearers to do certain actions, to forbid the hearers of doing something, and to ask questions so that the other characters of the movie provide information, give confirmation, give opinion, further explanation, etc. While by uttering commissive type, they promise the hearers that they as speakers will do certain future action, for example promising to do something.

It was concluded that the results of research on the level of complexity of sentences in “The Jakarta Post and Kompas” newspapers in the form of news editorials about "Health", simple sentences and compound sentences often appear in the construction of complex sentences. This is because the two newspapers avoid sentences that are too long so that they can minimize the wastage of words in sentences and can provide information to readers by using appropriate conjunctions. The more concise the presentation of language and sentences in newspapers, the easier it will be for readers to get information.
