Abstract

Abstract

Babies and toddlers are part of a life cycle characterized by rapid physical growth and social development. Stunting experienced by children is a condition of long-term nutritional deficiency as well as the result of repeated infections and environmental factors. Parents should be skilled in caring for children so that stunting can be avoided. Skills improvement alternatives can be accessed by using the KABITA family-based application. The aim of the research is to determine the effect of using the KABITA family-based growth and development application on improving the skills of mothers of toddlers regarding parenting, eating patterns and sanitation. The research method uses a quasi-experimental design with a pre and post with control group design. The sample in this study was 60 people, with 30 people in the control group without using the application and 30 people in the intervention group using the application for one month. The research was conducted in the working area of the Turikale Community Health Center, Maros Regency. The research instruments used were questionnaire sheets, observation sheets, and the KABITA application. Data analysis used the Mann Whitney statistical test. The results showed that there was a significant difference between the knowledge of the intervention group in the pretest and posttest scores (p value = <0.05). There was also a significant difference in the posttest results of the skill levels of the intervention group and the control group (p value = <0.05). The conclusion of this research shows that using the KABITA application can improve the

Abstract

Background: Nutritional status refers to the level of a person's nutritional condition which is categorized based on its type and severity, such as overweight, good nutrition, undernutrition, and malnutrition. Objective: This study aims to determine the relationship between the type and frequency of complementary feeding of BREAST MILK (MP-ASI) and the nutritional status of infants aged 7–12 months in the working area of the Mangasa Health Center. Methods: The research design used was observational with a cross-sectional approach. Results: The results showed a significant relationship between the type of MP-ASI and the nutritional status of the baby (ρ = 0.037). Most of the babies given commercial MP-ASI had normal nutritional status (61.5%), while babies given locally made MP-ASI mostly showed abnormal nutritional status (78.6%). Conclusion: It is recommended that health workers continue to improve education and counseling to mothers under five about the importance of providing proper MP-ASI, both in terms of type, frequency, and nutritional content.  For mothers and families, it is expected to be more selective and active in choosing and preparing MP-ASI, by prioritizing aspects of nutritional adequacy and food safety. Local MP-ASI can still be a good choice if prepared with nutritious, clean, and suitable ingredients for the baby's needs.

Abstract

Background: Diaper dermatitis is a common skin condition among infants who wear diapers and is characterized by redness, irritation, and discomfort. Appropriate diaper area care is essential for maintaining skin integrity and preventing worsening of diaper dermatitis. Extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) has been used as a topical agent in infant skin care; however, evidence regarding its effectiveness in reducing the severity of diaper dermatitis among infants aged 0–12 months, particularly in primary healthcare settings, remains limited. This study aimed to determine the difference in changes in diaper dermatitis severity between infants receiving EVOO and those receiving standard diaper area care in the working area of Samata Public Health Center, Gowa Regency. Methods: This study employed a quasi-experimental design using a non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest design. The sample consisted of 34 infants aged 0–12 months with diaper dermatitis who were selected using purposive sampling, with 17 infants in the intervention group and 17 in the control group. The intervention group received topical EVOO at a dose of 2–3 drops at each diaper change, with an average frequency of 3–4 applications per day for 14 days, whereas the control group received standard diaper area care. Diaper dermatitis severity was assessed before and after the intervention using the Diaper Dermatitis Severity Index Score (DDSIS). Changes in DDSIS scores were calculated as the difference between pretest and posttest scores and were compared between the two groups using the Mann–Whitney U test. Results: The median DDSIS score in the intervention group decreased from 2.0 at pretest to 0.0 at posttest, with a median change of 2.0 (IQR, 1.0–2.0). In the control group, the median DDSIS score decreased from 2.0 to 1.0, with a median change of 1.0 (IQR, 0.0–1.0). The Mann–Whitney U test showed a statistically significant difference in changes in DDSIS scores between the intervention and control groups (U = 78.5; p = 0.002). Conclusion: In this study protocol, 14 days of EVOO administration was accompanied by a greater reduction in diaper dermatitis severity compared with standard care among infants aged 0–12 months. EVOO may be considered as a potential topical intervention for diaper dermatitis; however, its use should be accompanied by standard diaper area care and monitoring of the infant's skin condition. Because this study employed a non-randomized quasi-experimental design, the findings should be interpreted as a difference in changes in severity between groups rather than as evidence of causality equivalent to that provided by a randomized controlled trial.
