Abstract

Benny Yohanes (usually written as BenJon for his stage name) is known for his works that are oppositional towards the hegemony of realism in Bandung theater, especially the realism theater of Suyatna Anirun. BenJon’s works generally imply political themes, or at least as comments on political situations or ideological critics. However, he uses different approach, for example from the slogan of Rendra’s Theater Workshop. In some of Benjon’s performances, there is an impression that the stage is dominated by symbolic festivities. Excitement can be found in artistic furniture, props, hand props, costumes, musical furniture, and make up. This paper is aimed at examining one of BenJon’s works, namely Shakespeare Carnivora, which is considered by BenJon as a show that is carried out outside of the ethics of the process and its directing tradition. Not only tried to oppose the tendency of artistic excitement by using significant objects, Shakespeare Carnivora was also directed collaboratively with Irwan Jamal. They work with the actors who are members of the Oyag Forum. This research is specifically intended to discover and investigate the postcolonial conditions in the Shakespeare Carnivora performance. More specifically, through the concepts of appropriation and ambivalence, which intertextually combine William Shakespeare’s Hamlet text, the legend of Sangkuriang-Dayang Sumbi and the narrative of official Indonesian history.Keywords: Shakespeare Carnivora, BenJon, Critical Ideology, Appropriation, Mimicry, Postcolonial Condition

Abstract

Cerita rakyat dan naskah drama merupakan lahir dari penulis atau pengarang yang terus mengalami dinamika perkembangan terkait tata sosial yang terjadi di masyarakat. Fokus kajian ini pada teks naskah cerita rakyat dan naskah drama yakni; cerita rakyat Legenda Situ Bagendit, Perjuangan Suku Naga dan Sobrat menjadi bahan analisis sebagai sumber data dokumen yang menyajikan representasi teks naskah cerita ditemukan tematik yakni narasi kapitalisme. Penelitian ini ntuk melakukan kajian secara analisis kualitatif dengan memahami situasi, peristiwa, kelompok atau interaksi sosial masyarakat. Kajian ini menggunakan pendekatan sosiologi seni. Naskah teks cerita ditulis dalam Legenda Situ Bagendit di ambil dari cerita rakyat Jawa Barat;Nyi Mas Inten perempuan kaya raya yang menumpuk harta, Perjuangan Suku Naga;Investasi pembangunan dan pertambangan melalui elit penguasa negara bekerjasama pengusaha asing pemilik modal sedangkan Sobrat;tenaga kerja jadi kontrak kuli di tambang emas. Gambaran kisah cerita tersebut menjadi kondisi fakta sosial budaya yang ada ditulis secara lugas dalam naskah cerita. Kata kunci: naskah cerita, kapitalisme, sosiologi seni

Abstract

This research discusses an eclectic visual narrative of nine paintings about the Indonesian nautical culture by Arthur S. Nalan. Nautical society inhabits all the coasts of the Indonesian archipelago and relies on maritime-related livelihoods. Nautical society is rarely used as a source for artistic creation. This research uses the Practice-Based Research method edited by Craig Vear (2022), applying the theory of the Aesthetic Communication approach of Ole Thyssen (2010), which describes identity, vision, and image: initial remarks. Therefore, the nine paintings studied in this research can be understood as a pneumonic device for those who recognize, understand, and appreciate the Indonesian nautical culture. The research was carried out through the process of “analyzing” nine paintings by Arthur S. Nalan. The finding in this research is an eclectic visual narrative of the Indonesian nautical culture. This research concludes that the nine paintings present the dynamics of the Indonesian nautical culture.
