Abstract

By the end of 2019, Covid-19 outbreak has hit the whole world, and its impact has changed the learning process from face-to-face learning to virtual-based learning. This phenomenon also affected the learning process conducted by pre-service teachers in the internship program held by the University of Muhammadiyah Gresik in rural areas of Loei, Thailand. Due to the pandemic, the process was turned online. The online learning was a challenge for pre-service teachers because teaching online has never been done before, and the pre-service teachers didn't have much experience in it. The pre-service teachers felt that problems occurred were mostly due to limited signals and language differences that made it difficult for the pre-service teachers to communicate with the students. Therefore, to see a different view from the students, the researchers were interested to know the students' perspective towards virtual-based learning implemented by the pre-service teachers in a rural area of Bankhoksrijaroen School. The researchers distributed a survey to 37 students to find out their perspective about virtual-based learning. The result showed that the students had several problems such as differences in language, internet connection, limited learning media, and less effective learning process. However, there was a difference between virtual-based learning and conventional learning, but it was not considered a problem regardless of the unknown ending of the pandemic. The virtual-based learning was deemed able to replace face-to-face learning process, and the students also stated that face-to-face learning was not necessary to be implemented during the pandemic.

Abstract

This study investigates the intercultural relationship development of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students participating in an International Learning Program. Amid travel restrictions, a limited number of students engaged in a cross-border experience in Malaysia and Singapore. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, the research examines the stages of intercultural relationship development and associated challenges. Twenty eighth-grade students from East Java, Indonesia, comprising an equal distribution of male and female participants, were selected for the study. Through analysis, three distinctive stages emerged in the process of intercultural competence (ICC) development: "trial," involving the exploration of new customs and habits; "enmeshment," focusing on individual character growth in new contexts; and "renegotiation," emphasizing dialogue and reflection on cultural experiences' impacts. Drawing on existing literature, the study proposes strategies for ICC development, including self-awareness, cultural awareness, motivation enhancement, and cultural knowledge acquisition. Additionally, ICC improvement techniques, such as cultural assimilation, comparison methods, and reformulation, were identified as valuable tools for English language instruction.

Abstract

Pragmatism is an important factor to take into consideration when developing political speech because the main goal of political speech is to communicate with the public and foster trust. 1) Identify the constructive and destructive forms of politeness employed in President Jokowi's statements. 2) To determine how frequently President Jokowi used positive and negative strategies in his speech. In this study, a qualitative research design was used. Using document analysis, it is possible to pinpoint the diplomatic techniques Jokowi employed during his speeches. According to the analysis, more positive politeness strategies (96,9%) than negative politeness strategies (3,1%) are used. The analysis showed that the most popular positive politeness tactics were to show greater interest in the recipient and to use in-group identity markers. The speaker only employed one impolite tactic, which was to show deference. To gain the trust of Indonesians, Jokowi primarily employs positive politeness techniques.
