Abstract

This study explores Teachers' Experiences in Online Teaching and Learning Modality. The participants were selected private school elementary teachers in Pagadian City offering Online Modality in School Year 2020-2021. The study was based on the interpretivist paradigm since the researcher used social skills to construct knowledge and meaning. Case study was utilized. Teachers' experiences include perception, way of delivering instruction using online platforms, struggles, adjustments, and suggestions for improvement. The study is supported with data from multiple sources: Interview Guide Questions, Principals’ Evaluation Form, and Researcher’s Checklist. Participants perceived online modality as agent of continuity of learning, and challenging. It showed that Zoom teleconferencing is the preferable online platform to use. The participants’ struggles were power interruption, poor internet connectivity, computer technology operations, imposition of classroom management, lack of preparation, and getting used to another personal work-schedule. The participants' adjustments pointed to acceptance of situation, self-exploration, asking teaching materials, and knowledge-skill support from the school. The participants and principals' responses led to attending trainings regarding Online Teaching Methodology in general. Based on the findings, the researcher recommends to the outmost possibility that there may be ICT trainings, provision of upgraded internet connectivity and gadgets, reducing workload and class size.

Abstract

This study intends to explore the challenges and coping strategies of selected public rural high schools in transitioning from modular to in-person classes. It utilizes a qualitative-case study design gathering primary data by interviewing school heads, ancillary coordinators, teachers, and parents from 3 public high schools in the rural districts of Pagadian City. Coding was the strategy used to analyze the data gathered. Analysis reveals that amidst the implementation of full in-person classes, schools experienced challenges in adapting to the new normal, managing misbehavior, academic unpreparedness, mental health concerns, maintaining health and safety standards, and sustaining school operations. Consequently, schools applied measures to address such challenges by applying systematic response, resourcefulness, effective communication, sustaining productivity, and creating an encouraging environment. Hence, recommendations to further address challenges were discussed. The primary contribution of this study lies in providing a deeper understanding of the challenges and coping strategies faced by rural high schools in transitioning to the "new normal" of education. However, the school head also faced challenges such as communication due to the parade of tasks and insufficient resources for module printing. Nevertheless, they were able to solve these challenges. Different modalities call for different tasks, different tasks demand different preparations, different preparations advance to level of operations. School Heads resilient attitude toward the goal of negating these uncontrollable stretches and putting colleagues’ contexts on top of decision making save the day.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to describe the experiences of teachers in managing dual roles – as an administrator and class adviser. This study utilized a qualitative research method, particularly a case study design using Merriam's Approach. Twelve participants were teachers from the Zamboanga Sibugay division, designated as school heads and class advisers in their schools. Interviews were done to gather information and analyze their responses using Merriam by developing one theme to answer the objectives. The findings result in three themes: descriptions of school heads to their performance, struggles of school heads in performing dual roles, and coping strategies employed by the school heads to perform their dual roles. They found their dual role fulfilling and challenging and managed their struggles by applying different coping strategies. The efforts they rendered toward their dual roles were remarkable and their dual roles performance was recognized and appreciated. Thus, teachers in rural areas who served also as school administrators need to manage their time in doing their huge responsibilities.
