Abstract

Every language has its own specific rules in pluralizing nouns. This research found the ability of students in pluralizing nouns in English. Pluralizing nouns is divided into two forms, regular and irregular form. The objectives of the research were to find out their ability and problems to pluralize nouns. The instruments used in this research were test, and interview. The sample of this research was 32 students. Based on the test, the number of the ability was very good, 25% (8 students), good 38% (12 students), and medium, 15% (5 students), while bad 13% (4 students), andvery bad 9% (3 students). The problems were that the students did not know accurately the rules or patterns how to pluralize noun in English especially the irregular ones (63%), not understanding the materials of plural nouns (15%), feeling difficult to apply plural nouns in sentences related to concordances (13%), and Feeling confused with the process of pluralizing irregular nouns dealing with some exceptions (9%).

Abstract

In writing songs, songwriters often use figurative language. In this study, the researchers analyzed the figurative language contained in three of Idina Menzel's songs, namely "Let It Go", "I Got My Love to Keep Me Warm" and "For The First Time in Forever". The objective of this study is to find out the type of figurative language used and the meaning represented by the figurative language in the three songs of Idina Menzel. The theoretical benefit of this study is that this study can be a reference to other researchers who do similar study. While practical benefits are divided into two, for students and teachers. For students, research may be useful to increase understanding and knowledge of figurative language; increase students literacy motivation, especially figurative language observation; and students become more creative and critical. For teachers, this research can be useful as a reference in learning, especially figurative language; gain new experiences in different learning situations; and maximize teacher satisfaction because students' language skills are increasing. This study is a descriptive qualitative approach. Results of study found that there were eleven figurative languages used by songwriters, namely hyperbole as much as 31.3%, repetition 25.4%, personification 9.8%, metaphor, simile, and alliteration 5.8%, onomatopoeia, irony, and idiom. 3.9%, and finally imagery and pleonasm 1.9%. In addition, the songwriter also uses connotative and denotative meanings in the three songs.

Abstract

Abstract : Layla Majnun is one of the works of Nizami and Romeo and Juliet is one of the works of William Shakespeare. both novels are romance tradegy novels. Romance tragedy novels usually use a lot of figurative language to beautify the language. This study aims to describe some of the types of figurative language in the novel Layla Majnun, to describe some of the types of figurative language in the novel Romeo and Juliet, to describe the comparison of the types of figurative languages found in novel Layla Majnun and novel Romeo and Juliet. The data obtained for this study are qualitative data. This means, the data are not in the forms of numeric. The data were discourse, such as dialogues, descriptions, ideas or perspectives. The main data of the study are taken from the tragedy novels. The collected data are mostly in the forms of discourse and dialogues taken from the novels as the writers of the novels often apply figurative languages to express their ideas. There are several figurative languages in the discourse and dialogues obtained from the novels which could be interpreted by using Pragmatics theory to identify the meaning behind them. The results of this study indicate that there are similarities and differences in figurative languages in the two novels. The similarities between the two novels are Personification, Metaphore, Hyperbole, and Simile. The differences between the two novels are: Parable, Embodiment, Cynicism, Repetitive, and Irony. Abstract

Procedure text writing training at tenth grades students Teknik Kendaraan Ringan dan otomotif programs SMK SwastaYapim Biru-Biru was a training that aimed to maximize students' ability to write an English text, specifically procedure text and to make it easy in developing generic structures, linguistics feature of procedure text and type of procedure texts, and also students were able to answer questions related to the text. The subjects of the training were tenth grades students SMK Swasta Yapim Biru-Biru, Teknik Kendaraan Ringan dan Otomotif program. The communicative method was used as a method of training, presenting procedure text material which would become the basic knowledge and a benchmark successful of training that was given to students. There were several supporting instruments that were used to achieve successful of the training, such as laptops, cameras, projectors and printed texts, which were an important part of the training implementation. The results of training in writing procedure texts informed that students' ability in writing procedure texts, especially writing procedure texts in English had improved. It could be known based on successful of students in writing a procedure text that was be adapted to students program, Teknik Kendaraan Ringan dan Otomotif program.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the challenges that seniors in high school encountered when responding to reading comprehension questions on the UTBK exam. This study employed a qualitative methodology. Senior high school students who have taken the UTBK test were the subjects of this study. This research was conducted in SMAS Pangeran Antasari Medan, in class XII IPA, there are 32 students in it. According to the study's findings, high school students' lack of interest in reading made them bored when reading the text in front of them. It was also difficult for them to decipher the meaning of the text because they lacked the necessary vocabulary and didn't practice answering questions about reading comprehension. As a result, they believed that the UTBK test was too difficult for them. So this research, senior high school students must increase their practice of reading comprehension questions both at home and in class, as well as their interest in reading and vocabulary, to overcome these challenges. This will make it simpler for them to solve problems in the reading comprehension section. Keywords: reading comprehension, UTBK

Abstract

This research was conducted to identify the various types of errors made in English descriptive texts written by tenth graders at Free Methodist Private High School Medan during the 2022-2023 academic year. This research was conducted on 36 students who became the focus of the research. This research method is descriptive qualitative. Research is conducted offline. Written test-based data collection method. The researcher checked the writing errors of the descriptive texts made by the students. This study concentrates on the categorization of writing errors made by students. The Surface Strategy Taxonomy analysis of the findings revealed 30 inaccuracies in student-submitted descriptive texts. There were 9 addition errors with a total of 30%, 16 errors of omission with a total of 54%, 5 misformation errors with a total of 16%, and 0 ordering errors with a total of 0%. The majority of errors, or 15 out of 30, are spelling (Spelling) errors, which are classed as errors within omission errors. In conclusion, the researchers found 30 errors in the descriptive text written by class X IPS 1 SMA Medan Free Methodis.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to identify the different types of errors that ninth-grade students at SMPN 1 Kuta Buluh, Tanah Karo committed when writing narrative texts during the academic year 2022–2023. There were 28 students in this study. The author used a qualitative descriptive approach. On Friday, May 19, 2023, an offline investigation was conducted. The researchers looked into the narrative text writing errors made by the students. The categorization of student writing errors was the study's main goal. The Surface Strategy Taxonomy analysis of the results revealed 40 mistakes in the students' narrative text. 11 addition mistakes totaling 27.5% were made, as were 20 omission mistakes totaling 50%, 7 misformation mistakes totaling 17.5%, and 2 misordering mistakes totaling 5%. The most typical mistake is omission (20).

Abstract

This study explores the application of the clustering technique to enhance creative writing on the descriptive text for junior high school students at SMP Marisi Medan. The research question focuses on assessing the effectiveness of the clustering technique in writing descriptive text. The objective is to determine whether the use of the clustering technique significantly affect to enhance students' writing skills. The research adopts a pre-experimental design, within the population of 298 eighth-grade students. The sample consists of 20 students, selected through purposive sampling. The research employs a writing test comprising both pre-test and post-test assessments. Following the application of the clustering technique in teaching descriptive writing, the post-test mean score (79.0) surpasses the pre-test mean score (64.0). The hypothesis testing results, with a Sig. (2-tailed) score of 0.000 less than 0.05, lead to the rejection of H0 and acceptance of H1. In essence, the findings indicate a significant positive impact of utilizing the clustering technique on the effectiveness of students' descriptive writing skills.

Abstract

In writing descriptive text, there are five aspects that need to be considered: identification, description, language use, vocabulary, and mechanics. Based on the problems identified at the beginning of the research, the aim of this research is to assess students’ ability to write descriptive text was determine students' abilities in writing descriptive texts for class XI students at SMK PANGERAN ANTASARI. This research focuses on 23 students. Researchers apply qualitative methods. This research was carried out directly on Tuesday, May 21 in class XI of SMK PANGERAN ANTASARI. Researchers examined deficiencies in students' descriptive text writing. This research focuses on categorizing students' writing errors. Data was obtained through a descriptive text-writing test. The results of the research show that students’ abilities in writing identification varied from bad to good, their ability in writing descriptions was less than satisfactory, their ability in using language, vocabulary and mechanics was also less than satisfactory. Additionally the research shows that students experience struggles in clearly identifying objects, developing ideas related to their lack of understanding of the structure of the simple present tense, as well as facing limitations in vocabulary and making mechanical mistakes.
