Abstract

Spatial thinking skills are essential in everyday life. These skills can be improved through geography learning. Various studies on efforts to improve spatial thinking skills through geography education have been conducted in Indonesia; however, none have specifically examined the various models, teaching materials, and learning outcomes. Through a comprehensive review of previous findings, this study was conducted to fill this gap. The results of this study can be helpful for teachers and researchers in further developing geography education. This study employs a qualitative research design, specifically a document study or literature review. Publish or Perish software is used in the process of exploring or conducting literature searches. Through the initial search process, a total of 61 documents were obtained. These documents were then reviewed individually, resulting in a total of 16 documents that met the inclusion criteria. The results of the study showed that the most widely applied geography learning model was Project-Based Learning, followed by Discovery Learning and EarthComm. The teaching materials used are Disaster and Disaster Management, Basics of Mapping, Remote Sensing, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Atmosphere, Hydrosphere, Lithosphere Dynamics and Its Impact on Life, and Potential of Indonesian Marine Waters. Through the application of the learning model, various improvements were obtained in several indicators of spatial skills. The Project-Based Learning model is the most successful approach in improving various indicators of spatial thinking skills, including Analogy, Aura, Pattern, Association, Form, and Analysis.

Abstract

Abstract. Geography is an important science for life and career. However, statistical data shows that the study programs in geography education and non-education geography are not highly favored at state universities in Indonesia. This study aims to analyze the trends and predictions of interest in geography studies, both in the field of education and non-education, at state universities in Indonesia. This research is descriptive and exploratory with a qualitative approach. The research design used is a case study. The case study emphasizes the researcher to gather various data that will be processed and analyzed in-depth. The data used in this study is secondary data obtained from the Ministry of Education and Culture. Data analysis is conducted using descriptive statistical analysis that involves describing the findings of trends and predictions for the future in the specified period. The results of the study show that interest in geography between 2019 and 2023 tends to decrease. This interest can be seen from the number of applicants for geography study programs at state universities through achievement-based pathways. In 2019, there were far more applicants for geography education programs compared to non-education geography programs. However, the declining trend has caused the number of people interested in geography education in 2023 to be nearly the same as those interested in non-education geography, both around 3.000. Interest in geography studies also varies by region. The highest number of applicants is in Java Island (71.88%). The projection calculation results show that non-education geography programs are much more popular than geography education programs. However, the number of applicants from outside Java and Sumatra is expected to be less than 200 people. The conclusion of this study is that interest in geography at state universities in Indonesia tends to show a downward trend, both in the education and non-education fields. Predictions for the future indicate that interest in geography education programs will tend to be lower than that of non-education geography programs.
