Abstract

This study analyzes the news framing of two media, republika.co.id and tempo.co, towards Erick Thohir who served as the general chairman of PSSI for the first 3 months (March-May 2023). Using Robert N. Entman's framing analysis method, this study highlights the differences in news content from the two media. This study is a qualitative study with content analysis techniques, which examines the choice of title, use of sources, choice of words, and strengthening the agenda setting. Data were collected from news from Republika.co.id and Tempo.co during the first 3 months of office from March to May 2023. Framing analysis includes four elements: define problems, diagnose causes, make moral judgments, and treatment recommendations. The results of this study indicate that there are differences in the content of the news presented by the two medias, Republika.co.id news tends to support and emphasize positive things, while Tempo.co news tends to be more neutral, critical and detailed. This finding indicates that the presentation of the news is diverse.

Abstract

This research is aimed at understanding the role of community radio as a community movement in building democratic values through media. When there was a change in governance from the New Order to the Reform Order, the Broadcasting Law (UU 32/2002 concerning Broadcasting) was born, which gave space to the community to take an active role in speaking out through community radio. Before the Reform Order, radio broadcast formats, both state-run radio (Radio Republik Indonesia – RRI), especially private (commercial) radio, were not allowed to produce news broadcast programs that were contrary to the state. So that people have no alternative to get real information. In fact, all private radio stations are required to relay within a certain time, for example news from government sources. If they violate, they will be subject to laws that curtail the freedom of private radio stations in seeking real information. There must be no broadcast spectrum that is different from that outlined by the authorized institution. This research explains how private radio after the Reformation played a role in managing news with community radio channels.Community radio can be used as an alternative medium for voicing community interests because it is managed by people who have the same vision and mission.
