Abstract

Kelurahan Mangunsari is located at Semarang city and emerges as a locale brimming with potential, yet grappling with the pervasive challenge of waste management, a predicament shared by many urban areas. This neighborhood faces the daunting task of dealing with both organic and inorganic waste, wherein the latter has seen some resolution through the establishment of a waste bank in RW 04. However, the management of organic household waste remains a critical issue. Addressing this, the Community Empowerment Team (PkM) from Universitas Negeri Semarang (Unnes) has embarked on a pioneering mission to imbue the local populace with the knowledge and skills necessary to transform waste into valuable resources, namely compost and ecoenzymes. This endeavor unfolds in three strategic phases: an educational campaign on waste management principles, hands-on training in compost and ecoenzyme production, and a rigorous monitoring phase to evaluate the program's efficacy. The initiative's results are commendable, marking a significant milestone in community-led waste management practices. Not only has it been successful in producing compost and ecoenzymes, but it has also fundamentally shifted the community's perception, recognizing the initiative as a transformative tool for enhancing household waste management. This case study not only underscores the potential of community empowerment in environmental stewardship but also serves as a replicable model for sustainable urban waste management solutions.

Abstract

Masalah pengelolaan sampah organik di Indonesia menjadi perhatian serius karena tumpukan sampah organik yang tidak terkelola dengan baik dapat menimbulkan berbagai masalah lingkungan dan kesehatan. Desa Rejosari dengan populasi 3.012 jiwa menghadapi rendahnya kesadaran masyarakat dalam pengelolaan sampah, yang tercermin dari penumpukan sampah di lahan tidak produktif serta keterbatasan pengetahuan dan keterampilan masyarakat dalam mengolah sampah organik menjadi produk bernilai ekonomi. Oleh karena itu, dilakukan kegiatan pemberdayaan masyarakat yang bertujuan meningkatkan kesadaran masyarakat Desa Rejosari tentang pentingnya pengelolaan sampah organik sekaligus memberikan keterampilan dalam pembuatan kompos dan eco-enzyme sebagai solusi pengelolaan sampah organik. Kegiatan ini meliputi edukasi mengenai bahaya sampah organik, pelatihan pembuatan kompos dan eco-enzyme, serta pemanfaatan hasil olahan untuk kegiatan urban farming. Data dikumpulkan melalui observasi, wawancara, dan kuesioner. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan bahwa edukasi, pelatihan, dan pendampingan berhasil meningkatkan pengetahuan dan keterampilan masyarakat dalam mengolah sampah organik, serta menghasilkan kompos dan eco-enzyme yang dimanfaatkan untuk pertanian lokal. Partisipasi masyarakat juga semakin aktif dengan adanya fasilitasi alat pengolahan sampah. Keberhasilan program ini menunjukkan bahwa edukasi dan pelatihan langsung mampu mendorong pengelolaan sampah yang lebih berkelanjutan sekaligus membuka peluang peningkatan kesejahteraan masyarakat melalui produk hasil pengolahan sampah.

Abstract

This study presents a novel method for synthesizing solid base catalysts by modifying calcium oxide (CaO) from dolomite via a sucrose-mediated hydrothermal process. In this approach, sucrose acts as a complexing agent to remove magnesium ions (Mg²⁺), a structure-directing agent, and a carbon-based template. After Mg²⁺ removal, calcium species were recovered through coprecipitation using sodium carbonate. The synthesized catalysts were characterized to evaluate their structure using X-ray diffraction (XRD), identify functional groups via Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), observe morphology and elemental composition through scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX), measure particle size distribution by particle size analysis (PSA), and determine surface area through Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis. The catalysts exhibited a surface area of 27.411 m²/g and reduced crystallite size, both contributing to enhanced catalytic activity. In the transesterification of Reutealis trisperma oil under optimal conditions (65 °C, 3 hours, methanol-to-oil ratio 9:1), the catalyst achieved 99.40% oil conversion and 88.82% biodiesel yield. A catalyst dosage of 7.5 wt% was optimal, while higher amounts caused emulsion and soap formation due to viscosity-related mass transfer limitations. This environmentally friendly synthesis route offers a reusable catalyst system for sustainable biodiesel production from non-edible feedstocks.
