Abstract

It has become increasingly common to develop the ecosystem of mangrove into a tourism product. Such trend is also seen in Indonesia, including the coastal part of Kulon Progo, DI Yogyakarta Province. However, as the case of other tourism niches, the development of mangrove-based tourism more often than not is facing myriad challenges. This brief research paper aims to identify the challenges related to mangrove-based tourism development, by using Kulon Progo mangrove areas as a case study. Based on data gathered from observation, GIS mapping, semi-structured interviewing, and literature study, this research finds that conflicts have been occurring in the development process of mangrove-based tourism in Kulon Progo. Conflicts related to local-to-local relations, intergroup competition, destination management, and tourism income distribution have been hindering the tourism development process. Given the main findings, potential conflict resolutions may include stakeholder collaboration, product innovation, and paradigmatic shift to shy away from mass tourism development model. This research contributes to the body of literature on mangrove tourism by adding the issue of tourism conflicts into the debate.

Abstract

Similar to other territories across the globe, the tourism industry in Gunungkidul has also been negatively affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. In response to this dreadful situation, the local government immediately developed various tourism policies. Therefore, this research intends to: a) identify policies issued by the Gunungkidul local government in response to the COVID-19 outbreak crisis; b) analyze the dynamics of the implementation of these policies; and c) examine the appropriation of the policies in accordance with a strategic and holistic framework of disaster and crisis management in tourism. This was a qualitative study in which data were collected through direct observation and literature review. The data in this study were then analyzed using thematic analysis techniques. The findings indicate that local governments published at least five strategic policies during the early period of the COVID-19 pandemic. These policies typically focus on the adaptive capacity dimension, particularly in the domain of strategic implementation, and result in more emergency response measures that are also oriented toward short-term action. It means that, so far, no policy has led to the restoration and reinvestment of the tourism sector in Gunungkidul in an effort to recover from long-term conditions. On the other hand, all stakeholders should go further to initiate policies that point to preventive and mitigating measures that emerge from the current crisis as well as to anticipate similar conditions that may occur in the future.

Abstract

The COVID-19 epidemic has impeded tourism activities worldwide. Pancoh Ecotourism Village is an instance of a tourist destination that was compelled to cease its operations amid the pandemic. Nevertheless, that does not imply that nothing can be accomplished.   Amidst the pandemic, it is imperative to create tourism offerings that are more inventive in order to adapt to the new normal period. The Pancoh Ecotourism Village offers an innovative tourism package that combines art and culture based on the concept of storynomics. This study employs the Participatory Action Research (PAR) method to engage village communities as active participants, rather than just sources of information. The aim is to involve them in the process of gathering, organizing, and presenting narratives about the local arts and culture that define the Ecotourism Villages of Pancoh.   This study discovered that the PAR technique is beneficial for students who are examining the extent of community involvement in developing a work plan, namely in this case, the creation of tour packages based on storynomics. However, PAR encounters challenges such as extended research duration, varying levels of informant motivation, and the researcher's requirement for considerable adaptability in terms of time and ability to engage with informants.

Abstract

Many studies have been conducted to investigate the philosophical issues of ecotourism, but none has explicitly addressed the components of ecotourism's ontology, epistemology, and axiology. Therefore, the purpose of this article is to examine the philosophical foundations of ecotourism from the perspectives of ontology, epistemology, and axiology. A literature review was employed in this article. According to analysis, the ontological basis of ecotourism, which emerged in the mid-1980s as a manifestation of alternative tourism and as a ‘face’ of sustainable tourism, is intimately linked to 'nature,' which is constituted by the generative power of a transcendent principle of unity, being, and goodness. In this sense, ecotourism philosophy centers on the notion that unique sites for ecotourism purposes are considered 'paradises'. Tourists and inhabitants of these unique places should engage in ecotourism with consciousness; that is, the place should be conserved intact, as originally discovered. The epistemology of ecotourism is constructed as an abstraction of a relationship that cannot be separated between humans and the environment in the context of tourism. From an axiological standpoint, ecotourism is based on environmental values and ethics that should be included in the tourism industry to foster harmony between humans and nature as a good existence.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis article aims to investigate actual conditions and construct potential recommendations to rejuvenate mangrove ecotourism destinations to be more sustainable along the southern coast of Kulon Progo using a Tetrapreneur Model. In this study, a qualitative research approach was adopted. To obtain primary data, systematic observation and in-depth interviews were utilized, while a literature study strategy involving a comprehensive review of relevant documents in various forms, such as textual, visual, digital, and physical items, was employed to collect secondary data. The results indicate that the four approaches of the Tetrapreneur Model, namely Chainpreneur, Marketpreneur, Qualitypreneur, and Brandpreneur, as examined in this study, have their own unique set of facts, comprising Improvement Gap Facts, Sustainability Potential Facts, and Supporting Facts for the rejuvenation of mangrove ecotourism destinations. Furthermore, stakeholders in mangrove ecotourism destinations, particularly local community groups acting as tourism business operators and the local government of Jangkaran Village, are suggested to consider implementing several practical recommendations based on the Tetrapreneur Model.ABSTRAKTujuan dari artikel ini adalah untuk menginvestigasi kondisi aktual dan mengkonstruksi rekomendasi potensial untuk meremajakan destinasi ekowisata mangrove agar lebih berkelanjutan di sepanjang pesisir selatan Kabupaten Kulon Progo menggunakan Model Tetrapreneur. Kajian ini mengadopsi pendekatan penelitian kualitatif. Abstract

The growth of tourism villages is a central tenet of Indonesia’s tourism development policy. Nevertheless, based on the number of affected workers, the tourism village is one of the types of Indonesian tourist destinations hardest impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic has nearly entirely paralyzed the majority of tourism-related activities in the tourism village of Nglanggeran in Java. However, one unit has remained operational, namely Griya Cokelat, the women-led cocoa processing work unit. This study seeks to examine the situation of female workers in the tourism village during the pandemic, the capacity of women to acquire technology skills to bolster tourism resilience, and the impact of these activities on domestic relationships. The data collection included observing the working conditions of women in the tourism industry during the pandemic, conducting interviews with eleven informants, and examining pertinent literature. As a consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic, it was discovered that these women have had to learn more keenly how to use technology in order to shift their offline to online sales. Their technological adaptation has helped the tourism village’s resilience efforts.  Women’s ability to use technology—in this example, the Internet—supports the change in gender roles in families.

Abstract

The community development activities conducted by the Center for Tourism Studies at Gadjah Mada University (UGM) in 2024 took place in Sosromenduran Tourism Village, located in Gedongtengen Subdistrict, Yogyakarta. This tourism village, situated in the heart of Yogyakarta near Malioboro, possesses diverse potential and attractions that can be further developed to enhance the overall visitor experience in Yogyakarta. The primary objective of this initiative is to improve the capacity of tourism managers, particularly in strengthening the narrative of tourism attractions, which is implemented through the development of storytelling techniques outlined in a guidebook. The approach employed in this program is known as Participatory Action Research (PAR), which involves a collaborative and action-oriented research. In practice, PAR is carried out through several methods, including tourism discussions/dialogues (sarasehan), field observations, and in-depth interviews. The outcomes of this community engagement effort include the development of narratives for seven neighborhoods (kampungs) within Sosromenduran Village. Each neighborhood is identified by its unique identity and complementary tourism products. Another significant output is the creation of a guidebook designed to serve as a reference for local guides in Sosromenduran Tourism Village to introduce its attractions to visitors. Additionally, this guidebook is supplemented with thematic maps illustrating the distribution of tourism attractions across the seven neighborhoods in Sosromenduran Tourism Village. === Kegiatan desa binaan yang dilaksanakan Pusat Studi Pariwisata UGM tahun 2024 dilaksanakan di kampung wisata Sosromenduran, Kemantren Gedongtengen, Yogyakarta.
