Abstract

On June 18, 2018, the public was shocked by a song entitled #2019GantiPresiden, composed by Sang Alang. The music was created as a form of socio-political criticism related to the democratic party in Indonesia in 2019, to be precise, the moment of the presidential election on April 18, 2019. The song #2019GantiPresiden contains an exciting meaning and represents the socio-political reality that occurs in society at the time. Sang Alang's attention indicates that there is a discourse that he wants to build through the song. The author uses Van Dijk's (1997) critical discourse analysis method in reviewing the speech made by Sang Alang through the song lyric #2019GantiPresiden based on the element of text, social cognition, and social context. The song lyric implements the socio-political criticism before 2019 presidential election through online mass media reports. In this study, the song lyric #2019GantiPresiden will be based on the song's stanza, in which each stanza will implement the discourse built through online mass media reports. Based on this phenomenon, the speech developed by the creator and singer of the song #2019GantiPresiden will focus on online mass media reports, which containing the problems regarding the increasing unemployment rate due to the influx of foreign workers, rising basic needs, and the lack of seriousness in eradicating corruption cases. Each stanza of the song contains socio-political criticism of the government's policies because the existing guidelines are not in line with what the people expected. The song #2019GantiPresiden is a manifestation of the aspirations of the people's voices who want change, where the difference is a change in government leadership.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

This study consistently employs a qualitative narrative-psycholinguistic design to analyze the cognitive and emotional dynamics in the construction of millennial identity within digital narratives on X, Instagram, and TikTok. The analysis integrates thematic analysis, operationalized psycholinguistic coding based on Plutchik’s theory of emotions and Gee’s framework of identity representation, as well as a critical interpretive approach by Fairclough to situate the findings within the digital socio-cultural context. Data were collected through purposive sampling of at least 10 public narratives from each platform over a two-week period, using explicit criteria based on emotional intensity (marked by words, emojis, punctuation), and explicit/implicit identity representation. The findings indicate that X is dominated by collective reflection and resistance to stigma; Instagram foregrounds self-validation and authenticity; while TikTok displays humor-resilience as a coping strategy against socio-economic pressures. The analysis also reveals the prevalence of cognitive reflection patterns, emotional expression, and cross-platform identity synthesis, which aligns with recent studies on digital literacy and the psychological well-being of the millennial generation. The study’s contribution is to clarify the interrelationship between language, cognition, and emotion in shaping the digital identity of Indonesian millennials, as well as to underscore the importance of operational clarity and cross-platform synthesis in digital psycholinguistic research. The study recommends expanding research into cross-cultural contexts and over a longer duration to capture the dynamics of digital identity more comprehensively.

Abstract

Folklore plays a crucial role in preserving cultural identity and serves as a medium for transmitting moral, ecological, and social values across generations. This article examines Indonesian (Nusantara) and world folklore from a critical literacy perspective, emphasizing how narratives function as cultural texts laden with ideology, representation, and power relations. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, the study purposively selected ten folklore texts—five from Indonesia and five from global traditions (European, African, Greek, and Norse)—to ensure thematic and cultural comparability. Data analysis followed four stages: narrative structure and symbolism, contextual interpretation, critical interrogation of ideological positioning, and comparative synthesis. Findings reveal that Indonesian folklore highlights ecological wisdom, local spirituality, and communal values, whereas global folklore tends to stress moral order, universal justice, and cosmological struggles. Both traditions, however, converge in their role as instruments of moral education and cultural preservation, though with divergent orientations. Gender representations across cultures show ambivalence, reflecting both marginalization and symbolic empowerment. The study underscores the pedagogical potential of folklore in formal education and advocates for its revitalization through digital media and community participation. Ultimately, folklore is conceptualized as a living, adaptive tradition that negotiates values and identities, sustaining its relevance in contemporary globalized contexts.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the dominance of social actor contained in the Tagar. Id's Minangkabau language Gospel application news. The researcher uses van Dijk's view in showing the relationship between social cognition and social actor in mass media's news. The researcher also uses Fairclough's socio-cultural approach in offering the relationship of discourse observed and socio-cultural perspective in the report. Thus, the researcher applies a qualitative approach with van Dijk's socio-cognitive and Fairclough's socio-cultural approach as an analytical knife. The study result indicates the person scheme and event scheme domination in the Tagar. Id's Minangkabau language Gospel application news. The two schemes play an essential role in describing Irwan Prayitno's figure as West Sumatera Governor through the Minangkabau socio-cultural reality. In van Dijk's point of view, social cognition is a form of effort in examining an event or events based on the characters' involvement in the news text. The figure of Irwan Prayitno as the governor of West Sumatra becomes a particular interpretation process for Tagar. Id journalist in producing news by analyzing the leadership form of Irwan Prayitno and the event that happened in Minangkabau community as details of Irwan Prayitno's profile, the socio-cultural reality of the Minangkabau community, and the reasons for rejecting the Minangkabau language Gospel application.

Abstract

Abstract

This study explores the integration of critical literacy in language teaching as an innovative strategy to foster students’ reflective thinking and intercultural competence. Drawing on Freire and Giroux’s critical literacy framework, Dewey and Schön’s reflective thinking, and Byram and Deardorff’s intercultural competence models, the research combines literature review, best practice analysis, and theoretical case studies. Findings reveal that critical literacy equips students to evaluate texts and discourses embedded with ideological values, while reflective thinking enhances self-awareness and social engagement. Intercultural competence, in turn, strengthens adaptability in cross-cultural communication. Major challenges identified include limited understanding of socio-cultural issues, difficulties in analyzing multimodal texts, implicit bias, and deeply ingrained cultural stereotypes. To address these issues, the study proposes strategies such as authentic text discussions, multimodal discourse analysis, intercultural simulations, and reflective practices. Practical solutions, including contextual scaffolding, step-by-step multimodal training, and interactive cross-cultural simulations, are recommended to ensure effective implementation. The research emphasizes the need for a holistic pedagogical approach that integrates critical literacy, reflection, and intercultural competence to develop learners who are critical, adaptive, and inclusive. Ultimately, such integration prepares students not only to succeed academically but also to engage meaningfully within increasingly complex global societies.
